Lost

I'll try to explain in few words. Was trying to make my sys stable @ 3.0Gz playing with the BIOS (hipertransport x 6) when it crash. Well not much of a surprise there; bring down ht to x5 and BSOD; down to x4 BSOD everything to default values BSOD [STOP: 0x000000A5(0X0000000Z,0X89A4A140,0XE111EE78,0X899F C2D8).
Delete the raid config(raid0) and make a reconfiguration. Now It wouldn't hold the specs on the BIOS (you configure your bios, reboot and need to do it all over again and again). Shut the sys down and let it stand for a while then it will boot normally but now it don't show the 3rd hdd(even thou you can see it on the post). Right now it's working fine(still no 3rd hdd) but it "feels" like is going to fail any time. Haven't enable 2nd core yet.

Any ideas? Corrupted installation? Can I kick something?

Did you clear the CMOS?
I assume you reinstalled the OS. Pushing an OC too high can whack an OS very quickly. I usually make an image of a fresh instal with Acronis before I start trying to kill my machine. If I do, then all I have to do is restore and 20 min later I am up.

Clear CMOS more times than I want to remenber and yes make a complete re-installation. In fact, need to call M$ for reactivation(man I hate that). I have a full backup(including os and everything else; almost 60 Gig) on the 3rd hdd (is a raptor 74x10K) but loose access to that disk from the beggining. Also disconnect(phisically) the raid (2x250 caviar se) to boot from the raptor but didn't work.

Got Maxtor 300 external hdd. The plan is to install everything on it except the os and some stuff that goes to the raptor. What do you think?

Also; how is that image trick? Yes I know, still a noob.

It is a program called Acronis that Daniel and I use. Creates an invisible partition and creates an image of your OS and whatever. You can boot to a cd or a boot log on your drive and restore through a simple utility.

I use XP and want to reserve some space for Ubuntu.

So, do you think the plan is sound? You know having the shorcuts of almost everything else on the raptor?

I strongly suggest that you use one drive for windows, another for Ubuntu, Really, it just saves you so many hassles in the beginning...I've never gotten past the beginning...but I still try every year. It's fun and I'm seeing better Linux (more usable to me) all the time. Actually, when I can, I try to use a completely separate machine... but that is unnecessary, just greater convenience when trying to get Linux things done...things that can somehow take for days....to have another handy access... Look I'm slow learner and don't want to discourage you":O}

My biggest problem with Linux is that in Windows I have power, I know how to do stuff... stuff it took me years to learn...the hard way. It ain't much, but it's mine! Most the time I'm in Linux, I'm still just messing with Linux.":O}

But I tried Ubuntu several months back for the second time and was very pleased how practical it's becoming. I also try Fedora once a year.":O}

Ubuntu is not a priority. I don't know if pc games can be use with it and if they can how long will it takes me to learn how (you are not the only slow learner, belive me). So it will be XP in the raptor and games, programs and app in the maxtor. Do you think there are gains in performance to be made be using the hdd in this way?

BTW: downloading a 10 days trial of Acronis as we speak. How much should I spect to pay for the program? (in a cd or dvd, not downloaded)

I forget what I paid, I think it was around $30.00, does that sound right?
I haven't messed around with partitions much, as far as trying for performance gains by way of arranging your stuff, swap file whatever.

From what I've seen in the forums, there isn't a lot of performance gain to be had. You bought a fast Raptor, I think buying a fast drive is about as much good as you can do for yourself.

That's not to say there aren't small gains, I'm just not the guy to ask.":O}
But it does seem a sensible way to set your self up, 300 gigs of Storage and fast access on the Rapture.

That is pretty much how I have it set up. I think Acronis is about 30 bucks. EASY to use and works every time.

Good luck.
