My computer a splode

Hi guys,

Yeah, im having some computer trouble. i was browsing the net when all of a sudden the computer shut down with a strong smell of electrical burning. now the computer is not starting up. only the motherboard led come on and the rear led fan starts to spin but stops after .5 of a second. A computer store i took it to said that the computer was demanding more power than the power supply could produce. that cant be right as ive been running this setup for about 8 months, with no errors of the comp demanding more power.

My opinion is that the power supply has fried, what do you guys think.

Thanks.

Try taking everything you dont need to boot the rig out .

just try the main board out of the case with just the video card (if you dont have an onboard) and one stick of ram. try booting that way

Also when your mainboard is out of the case try looking around the board for any burnt places or capicitors damaged. Try your old PSU in your other rig also to see if thats not the issue... Suprised the PC shop didnt use a PSU tester

I have this tester

Based on what you've told me, power supply died and took the board with it.

Seen it loads of times in the past.

As i said, i dont have the comp on me. The store are gonna try a 750w in it and if that dosnt work then it has to be something else. The fact that the components in the mobo dont wont to power up makes me think that it is the mobo that blown. A capacitor or somthing may have blown up.

Dude you need another computer tech, the guy your dealing with is clueless!

I think Rondog may have this right.

My opinion is that a surge or something went through the psu and smashed the mobo, blew some capacitors or fried its power socket. The power supply still produces power, as the fans that are linked directly to it start to move and light up. But the power is then cut as the mobo is not responding, so the fan then stops.

How does that sound guys.

You're running a very power hungry machine. Contrary to popular belief, Enermax PSU's are not the cat's meow, IMHO. A 600W Enermax may be borderline for your components. However, I'm not a big fan of Enermax, one of them let me down.

well the shop are trying a 750w thermaltake at the minute. What makes me think the mobo is fried is that the cpu and gpu fans dont even move, as they are linked to the mobo.

It would be great if your mainboard and components aren't trashed. Here's hoping! AFAIK, a brownout can wreak the same havoc as an overvoltage spike. More likely, probably.
