I got the new drive and posted a pic of it above next to the origional one.
The model number is the same but of course the s/n is different.
Do you see anything that may indicate if the firmware is different?

Given that they were manufactured about 3 months apart, and the HDA #s are different, there are probably some differences in the firmware. However, since they were both made for HP, the differences are probably minor.

Try not to zap the boards with static?

I'm still waiting on the torx driver. I was hoping it would come today but the sears tracking is poor quality. It won't show me the current status of the package.
So maybe tomarrow. I've got all my tools ready.

Hexes, stars and torx. Bet this one is quite small. I hope you get it soon! I'm waiting on a DVD from a Amazon subcontractor. "It was mailed on the 30th." Beginning to have my doubts..

Same with mine. It was supposedly shipped on the 30th but every time I go to the ups site it doesn't show any progress. I'm starting to wonder myself. a T5 torx must not be a common size to order, yet I'm sure every 2.5" hard-drive uses them.

Sorta wish that desktop hard drives would feature torx mounting screws. Full size HDD's must be made from the softest aluminum known to man. I strip the threads in them by breathing fer cryin' out loud. Hope we both get our overdue deliveries soon!

I got the controller boards swapped and my computer recognizes the USB drive but it isn't showing in My Computer as a drive.
When I go to "Safely Remove Hardware" it shows up as:
USB mass storage device

Either the controller board is not compatible, or its working but I just need another way to get into it.

Its not making that repetative sound anymore but its also not making any read/write sounds.

Sounds like the controller is not reading the format on the drive as a valid format, so the operating system doesn't have anything to 'mount'.

This could be due to a controller incompatibility, or it could be due to the previous controller trashing the partition table or some other vital piece of data. The fact that you're not getting the 'tick tick' sound from the drive any more seems to pretty much support the notion that the previous controller was toast though.

If you mount the drive in the computer, does the BIOS recognize it? Will it attempt to boot if you allow it to do so? (If you press F8 as soon as you see the boot screen so that you can get to the boot options menu, nothing will be written to the drive.)

I'm going to try that tomarrow. I allready drove home to get the jumper and now I don't have the little plug that fits on the pins or the screws for the tray.
If it does try to boot what would I do in the Boot options menu?

If you don't want to take the change of letting it write data to the drive, I'd stop right there and reboot. Otherwise, you can try to let it boot and see how far it gets.

Honestly, I'd be surprised if it finishes the boot, given what you've told me so far.

Should I even bother then?
I'll offer again... How much would you charge to swap platters?
I can send you both drives and some DVD's to back up the data.

At this point, I don't have any reason to believe that swapping the platters would do any good. I think it is more likely that the original controller toasted the data.

Fortunately the loss isn't mine, but I really wanted to get that data.
Thanks everyone for all your help!
This is why I come to AOA, because there is plenty of people willing to help.
I still have the new/used drive that I bought. Hopefully the controller board didn't get messed up in the swap.

Fingers are crossed! Did you get your Torx driver? I received the DVD that was indeed mailed on the 30th, today. And it's from a local Zip code, WTH is up with that?? Don't tell me "they" are opening my mail!

See if you can find 'Portable Devices' in the control panel when its connected.

Sometimes it will load there but not anywhere else. You may then be able to get the data off it.

Get this, now the laptop doesn't want to cooperate with the newer drive.

The BIOS recognizes it but I did a self test and it failed.
#1 - 07 failed

I boot with disc and start formatting but it fails twice.
So now I partitioned the drive in half and format again and it works.
As windows is installing after the reboot it just randomly shuts down almost at the end.
I pop the drive out and use my adapter and it works fine. I format it again and now I'm trying to re-format in the laptop.
Oh, another thing, remember I said the broken drive would make read/write sound repetativley?
Now before Windows boots it makes that same sound and then a gray loading bar appears and finally loads windows.

I looked up the error and there isn't much that I can understand. Many people are having this problem.

I doubt its the hard drive. It may be something with the motherboard.
Any ideas what I could do?
