ATA laptop drive HELP!

My friends laptop wouldn't boot to windows. I tried everything, booting to safe mode, '' '' w/ networking, etc. It would only get to the windows logo and just stay there. In Safe Mode it would show files and then lock up.
So I connected it to a USB adapter to copy his important data. The drive powers up and windows (my computer) recognizes the USB drive.
But I can hear it spinning repetatively making the same sounds over and over again. Its either broken or some file on the drive is causing it to lock up.

Any suggestions?
Is there a way to erase a drive without formatting it?

I am thinking bad drive. There are some utilities you can DL and make a boot CD to test it. Maxtor and WD both have these I think.

First of all I fogot to tell you that I did a diagnostic with windows and it failed. I should try it again to tell you what it said.

today I tried testdisk-6.7 and it will find the drive in DOS and I've tried some of the options but the disc will still hang at a specific time.
I used Photorec_win to copy files and it did copy a bunch of them, but there are multiple copies of the same files and most of them are nothing.
Also it didn't stop the copying but instead locked up again.
The drive sounds like its readding but something is stopping it from continuing.
I wouldn't mind purchasing a recovery utility if I knew there was a good chance it would get files.

Hardware failure will usually stop you from retrieving data. It will probably end up just locking up and eventually not working at all. Leave it off and let it cool. Then boot to a disc and try to retrieve the data.

Boot to disc as in boot with a floppy?
How do I retrieve the data after that?

The Hard Drive self test had this error: Test Status #1- 07 failed

and this is the last file shown when I try to start in safe mode:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows\System 32\Drivers\atisgkaf.sys

Most manufacturers have specific diagnostic programs that can sometimes help. However, they usually won't run over USB, instead requiring direct access to the disk. That would mean some form of adapter (If it's PATA) so you can connect it. If the drive is SATA, you should be able to connect it to a standard SATA controller.

Put it in a static bag and throw it in the freezer for a bit. Then pop it back into the system and cross your fingers.

I have done that before and it does work sometimes. It is worth a try.

I'd go along with the freezer idea- I've done it about 5 times and it worked twice- and that's a helluva lot better than giving up.

Wrap the bag REALLY tight and make sure that you seal it up well to reduce the chance of moisture. Keep it in the freezer at least 4-5 hours- better overnight. Then, when you take it out make sure that you work fast- you'll know fairly quickly if it works or not. If it does, copy the data right away. Also, don't presume that if it works, it will last for any appreciable length of time. My understanding is that the cold *shrinks* the metallic parts and will sometimes loosen spindles, etc and help with head/platter problems. If it's a control board problem it won't help at all.

Good luck.

I read that too.
I may try it as a last resort.
I'll keep you updated on what happens.

The data recovery companies charge a lot of money: $300-$3000
Whoa!

I'm suspicioning that the drive controller is defective, rather than a physical defect in the platters or the heads (which is actually quite rare unless the drive has been dropped or something like that). That means that as long as you can get the same model of drive, you should be able to swap controllers between the two drives. By all means give the freezer thing a go (I've heard of it before but never tried it) and if that doesn't work, try swapping control boards.

I'll try the freezer this weekend. If that doesn't work I'll try to purchase the same model. Its hard to find the exact same model. I did a search and found a couple but I don't know if they are the exact same one.
I'll keep you all updated.

The freezer trick didn't work. I was a bit worried because there was moisture even after I put it in a small zip-lock baggie, wrapped that with papertowels, wrapped that in a regular towel and then put all of that in a large baggie. Same problem same sounds.

I allready tried with a different model and the controller board fit perfectly but the heads just made a single click and nothing happend.
So I'm going to do what Gizmo suggests and buy the exact same model and swap controller boards.

I'm worried about purchasing the exact same model. How do I know its exactly the same?
Here is the Segate Drive:

Here is one that I found so far, but for some reason its more expensive than a new laptop drive???!!!

So if the model number matches then its a compatible hard-drive?

I'm going to try the Santech USA one...

Not 100% guaranteed that it will read the media properly, but the odds are pretty good. Sometimes they make changes in the middle of a production run in the firmware and/or hardware that cause incompatibilities between drives, but short of getting a drive with close to the same serial number, there's no real way of dealing with that.

Allright. I'm going to risk it for the recovery.
My friend is giving me the laptop since he's buying a new one, but he still needs the data off the old hard-drive. So I figure, worst case scenario is:

if it doesn't work, I still have a working hard-drive for the laptop

Best case scenario:

if it does work, I've recovered his data and have a new hard-drive.

thanks for your help.
I'll keep you updated on what happens.

[edit]
ok I purchased one. I'm shipping it ground so it will probably take a week.
Why do the old used hard-drives cost so much?
If it wasn't for the data recovery I would just spend $60 on an 80 GB drive instead.
Now I've spend $67 on a 40 GB drive that is used.

Well the one I ordered from Santc isn't available anymore. At least they called me and told me. They didn't charge my credit card yet, so I'm going to order another one.
Delays Delays.

Ok I orded another one. Its probably going to take a week to get here.
I also ordered a T5 torx driver. That should be small enough to get the controller board off.
I tried a T6 but it was too large. The smallest I could find on Sears.com is the T5
