Windows Vista boots to blank screen

In either Safe mode or Normal mode Windows Vista Home Premium boots to a blank screen with a cursur and the users home folder open and nothing else. If you close the folder or thats there is the cursur.

Open up task manager, click file, new task. Type in explorer.exe the computer finishes booting as normal.

Any thoughts on why the computer is not booting correctly. I've tried creating REG_SZ files in the Winlogon and Run part of the registry under Local Machine to no avail.

I believe this is being caused by the registry and explorer opening in a window is whats occuring, I just do not know where to locate and fix the error.

Ideas?

stick a startup item in the registry to auto launch explorer?

Otherwise maybe a repair or reinstall could cure things

I agree. Much as reinstalling is a pain at least with Vista it'd only take fifteen minutes. Though perhaps a little longer to get it how you had it before.

First things I tried, no love.

So I just ran the recovery CD over the top.

MS is a little short on love lately.

Did the recovery get you on your way?
