New build, input devices stopped???

This is the weirdest thing I've experienced so far...
I just built a new computer, the specs are in my signature, and everything was working great. Windows XP home installed great, got all updates, installed about 20 games and all was good.
Except, Battlefield 2 wouldn't install. So after a week of troubleshooting I found that the installation wasn't recognizing my video card. So I decided to install an earlier version of the Nvidia drivers.
Thats when it happend!
Seemed to uninstall fine and I was asked to re-boot as usual, but when Windows came back up the mouse and keyboard don't work anymore.
The keyboard works fine in the BIOS and Windows starts as normal, except it pops up to install new hardware for the video card.

What is going on? How is the Nvidia drivers related to input devices?

I've uninstalled and installed drivers for video on AGP cards many times and this never happend.

I'm going to search the internet for similar problems, but if any of you have seen this before, please help.

Otherwise I will have to install Windows XP home again and start from scratch. Thats hours of work, but I'm definitely not going to use the same Nvidia driver 162.18_forceware_winxp_32bit_english_whql Its the only driver available for my card on the eVGA & Nvidia site.

The strange thing is that the drivers worked fine will all my games except Battlefield 2.

That's bizarre. I've never encountered a problem exactly like what you are describing, but I have seen situations in the paste where uninstalling a driver in Windows would cause something totally unrelated to get hosed as well. A complete reinstall would fix the problem, which would never be seen again.

Dunno what's up.

In MY experience... WHQL drivers ALWAYS mess SOMETHING up. I never use them.

As they have never messed me up, what we are seeing here is MS unpredictability...about the only thing I don't blame them for! ":O}

I've been searching the internet for the last hour and I can't find anything related to this.
Not cool though.
I do have some older Nvidia drivers that should support my card.
93.71_forceware_winxp2k_english_whql
91.31_winxp2kmce_english_whql

I do have a USB adapter that supports all IDE and SATA ports.
So I could plug the drive into another computer as an external drive.
But I don't even know if thats worth the trouble. I'm not sure what to look for. The System logs maybe?

You know what I was thinking is... was this inevitable?
If it didn't happen now, would it have happend in a year when I upgraded my Nvidia drivers for a new game? Hopefully its not a hardware problem or conflict. I'm not sure which drivers to try this time.
I just downloaded 163.44_forceware_winxp_32bit_english_beta, but I'm scared that next time I want to un-install is this going to happen again?

thanks for helping out. And thanks for responding so quickly.
I learn something new everyday.

oh, I also read that when I uninstall the Nvidia drivers its better to do it in SAFE MODE than in regular Windows mode. I'll remember that next time.

out...

Go here and get Drive Cleaner Pro from AOA Files and install it.

Then:

While still in windows go to control panel, Add and Remove programs. Remove the Nvidia drivers.

Then boot to safe mode. Then Open Drive Cleaner pro, select Multiple cleaning filters and remove WDM, Nvidia Stereo and Nvidia ...all in safe mode. Then reboot to normal Windows; hit cancle when Windows asks to install new hard ware. Then Install your new drivers... ":O}

Downloading it now.
I've mostly dealt with ATI drivers and they allways include an uninstall file that removes everything for you. It's pretty cool but I wonder why Nvidia doesn't?

They do, but like ATI, they can/may leave behind files that can/may screw up future install of drivers. I've heard that ATI is particularly bad about this when changing from ATI to Nvidia...wouldn't be surprized if Nvidia is just as bad.":O}

I have stayed away from the 1xx series drivers in XP. Had some weirdness myself. I have had issues of things not working after a botched video driver install before. Last time it was my optical drives. I ended up with a new reinstall of XP...

Interesting Samuknow, I didn't see that anywhere on the internet when I was searching, but I may do the same.
I mostly play older games anyways.
The only new one I'm going to play is Dark Messiah and its still a year old.
I'm going to try the Bioshock demo too.
After this I really don't want to install Windows XP again. It takes way too long to install 20 games. Specially the Steam ones because I have to update all of them on the internet and my connection at work is super slow.

right now I'm doing a repair and the mouse is working again.
But I forget if the repair erases all the programs I've installed or just re-installs windows?

A repair should leave your registry mostly intact, which means the applications you installed should still be there.

Gizmo nailed it right on the Head!
I did a repair and I'm back in business.
some drivers had to be re-installed like the lan drivers.
But I ran Doom 3 and Return to Castle wolfenstein and everything is good.
I did try to open up steam and it said there wasn't any profile information on this computer, so I hope I don't have to install all of my steam games again. Thats one of the things that take so long.
Praise the Lord REPAIR actually works!

Thats one gift I do have, patience patience patience.
I'm installing the updates and all the steamapps are still on the computer so hopefully when I re-login to steam it will just remember that all the games are updated.

Attention Nvidia board owners..............
When you want to uninstall video drivers in the control panel.
You click on Nvidia drivers to highlight them and then hit uninstall. A box opens and asks which drivers you want to uninstall.
Here is the deal Every Driver in the board is an Nvidia driver!! So you have to tic the video driver ONLY or you remove all drivers. Just pay careful attention when changing vid drivers. I own the P5N-E sli and the same rules apply. I saw these options the first time I removed a video driver to update it with a new one.
