Broken Laptop Screen!

My friend's laptop, an MDG "Custom built" laptop, was vicsously attacked. By a 19month old child with a heavy microphone with an edge. The microphone toy flew from his hand and hit the screen creating a rift in the screen. the outer plastic of the screen is intact, the LCDs however were not so lucky, the screen goes white when booted and a colourful shatter shows. it has a monitor port on the back of it, and i can't for the love of me figure out the software end of it to get the display to go to the monitor instead of the broken LCD. So any help would be greatly appreciated. plus any idea as to how difficult it would be to replace the laptop's screen would be good too.

If it was a common brand like HP Dell, IBM or Sony, the panels can be picked up on ebay for ~$200. I've done a replacement on an older Dell, and its fairly trivial, with no soldering or tools required, just unclip, unplug, and reverse to reinstall the new one.

heres an example of what you get **NEW DELL J4237 Replacement LCD PANEL SCREEN - (eBay item 170092305999 end time Sep-12-07 13:27:13 PDT)

although thats for a Dell.

No idea where to get a MDG panel. They probably use a standard panel, likely common with some other mainstream laptops that would be available, but its hard to know which one. It is more complicated than just matching the size and resolution and 'hoping' it will work.

Yeah just ebay your model number, I'm sure there is a screen for sale on there.

Getting it onto a monitor should be as simple as hitting the hotkey or hotkey combination. Most laptops have a key combination that switches to the external display. For example, on the machine I'm using <Fn>+<F8> switches modes. On the other machine I'm using <Fn>+<F7> switches modes.

There should be a little diagram on one of your F keys that corresponds to your Fn key. Mine shows two little screens and is Fn+F6.
