Windows 2000 Pro doesn't recognize video card

This is on my older computer, built in 2003.
EPoX 8rda3+ GeForce 5900 XT
There's been a delay of a few seconds when sound files are played. Both in games and when playing recorded music. Games would minimize or occaisonally disappear completely.
I was going to update the nVidia drivers, nForce and video. I made the mistake of using Driver Cleaner Pro. After installing newer drivers, any attempt to access the screen settings shows a Windows error message. "These drivers are for an older version of Windows and can't be used. Windows VGA drivers are being used" (I'm paraphrasing). The display resolution is shown as 9999 x 9999. If the nVidia video drivers are uninstalled, max resolution is 800 x 600 with 16 colors. Different combinations of nForce and video drivers all yield the same results.
I'll probably reformat and reinstall unless someone can suggest a remedy.
It's my old computer, so I'm willing to try almost anything.

Have you tried reinstalling? (I know it sounds drastic... but with windows it can often be the easiest way)

Thats the best idea I reckon, Windows 2000 pro should work fine with that 5900xt card, used the same card myself with that OS.

There is nothing wrong with 2k Pro.

Make sure all the drivers are completely removed. Boot into safe mode to do this. Reinstall all the drivers starting with the chipset.

other than that, a good ole reinstall will get it going.

Pro works great all the way up to 8800 GTX SLI without a hitch...and beyound....your problem lies elsewhere, Sam seems to be on the right trail...

1. Use driver cleaner to fully erase any ati or nvidia drivers
2. Install a WHQL version made for that card.

Your probably on to something there Chris. Some of the newer drivers do not play well with the older cards. Even though they are supported, it may not be the best to use them. I still use the drivers off of the nVidia site for my card. They work fine. I would rather have stability than an extra 15 points on an OC.

Vista is the best deal on BSOD per pound out there! Get a BSOD , pound on your Keyboard, recite the Billy boy blues mantra and reinstall! What's not to like!?

Well at lest vista has DX 10! Nobody else will ever have that! And look! Vista comes with Bill's phone number...You can call him EVERY time he likes!

It is lonely using W2k, No Bill to talk to, no support to insult my lack of intelligence for buying it.... just me W2K and my games just chuging along waiting for something worth even talking about that Vista can do that Pro cannot... Please something worth the mention...

Let alone worth the money....

Blessings on all Vista users... forgive them the
OS they should not have bought....and now can't give away....

Chris, I see your pain! I see your home sickness and the longing in your posts to return to W2K! Don't let pride stand in your way! Others have thrown Vista away! Some less kindly people have given it away, but they were still deep in the confusion paying for something that hurts you induces...

Chris, think of you son! Do you want him talking to Bill on the phone when your not around to protect him? Has your son even met Free Fedora? Made by a community that likes and cares for the young rather than exploits them.
Don't you think you should think this over once again? ":O}

You can't make toyland life and life cannot be made into toyland. There are real wars being fought all around us. Every move we make as individuals allies us or alinenates us in one conflict or another. Every dollar you spend is a vote in a great battle to decide weather there will be more to our lives than what feels good in the moment and the bottom line that feeds off our decisions.

Chris here's what you and other Vista buyers have forgotten:

"Never take anything the enemy offers you."

Did a reinstall and everything seems to be back to the way it was.
This is my old computer, so no way I'm changing the OS.
Only use the old computer when playing two guild wars characters together.
