It gets bad when I basically had the CD key memorised.

Using bery3d, gtkpod, wine, etc in 64bit Fedora or Ubuntu. Having open office install with the OS, and updates to every single piece of software in the repositories, checked at my convenience, more stable than windows with a smaller install and memory fooprint. Amazing forums for help, no CD key or activation, and being told the only thing that will happen if I install it on my mates machine is that they will like me more?

I can use almost any of my windows apps in wine, so I don't even have to change them, or many of them have similar/ports in linux.

No can't see why I would want to change from MS at all.

Funny that you say that.

MS may require it, but linux doesn't.

yeah.

funny thing is - the first time I heard free - I automatically reached for my wallet - just to make sure it was still there. Its amazing how much 'free' can cost in some places.

Then I found out it was truely free, just not in time.

Should be getting another 80GB to dual boot with Ubuntu soon.

Possibly the best yet for starters looking for an easy install and compatibility, But I didn't find Fedora significantly harder and liked it better.

I found ubuntu very easy to begin with.
Its gui based - almost everything that is done in the console can be done via the gui - even though the path may not be given.

The community is massive, and they have rules saying you can't flame newbies, or windows users.

I found that many of the how to's on the fedora forum, actually posted a link to the ubuntu forum.

I have 3 gripes though - the horrible brown theme (beryl 3d can take care of this quickly), and the annoyance of having to tick the boxes to allow universe and multiverse repositories, to get certain apps / codecs. Matroska (mkv) files cause problems in totem - the default player.

Make sure you do that first, then placing a dvd or divx disc in the drive should get totem to search for the codecs automatically, just making you enter your password once, and then agree to each dl seperately. All codecs were then downloaded.

Then followed instructions to install mplayer.

Having to use the console is probably the biggest sole reason I haven't tried Linux yet.
I really am not interested in typing commands to get things to work.

I never type in console! It's all cut and paste! And you ONLY need it when setting up, at lest I only need it to do that!

AP: Often the console is used because its faster. I have the console in the equivalent of the quick launch bar.

In Ubuntu I haven't found anythig I can't do via gui instead.

Say installing mplayer (linux video player) - must be connected to internet

Console:
sudo apt-get install mplayer
then enter password
Type y at prompt

Gui:
Menu -> Add remove programs
Refresh program list
Select 'Sound and Video'
Scroll down lost to mplayer
put check in mplayer, then click apply

It may ask for your password, then it will download and install mplayer.

There are several which are similar.
I prefer to edit my repositories via gui, as opposed to console which is supposed to be faster. Enabling universe and multiverse, allows several programs to automatically download codecs, etc when it detects it cannot utilise that file format - that aren't officially supported, eg mp3, and dvd's.

You don't have to use the console, its just more powerful, and often faster. Although you may want to try out Fedora first. As in ubuntu you don't log in as root - ever. If you need to edit file permissions, you have to use the console; either editing file permissions directly in there, or opening nautilus (the file browser) as root from there - I have not been able to find an alternative to it.
