Question Stumped. Total OS Failure - Hardlocks - My hardware hates M$

Here goes.

I finally got approval to get a new vid card.
A Palit 8600GT Super Palit Microsystems, (HK) Ltd
The rest of the system specs are in my sig.

Now upon install (remove, clean, download and reinstall new drivers) I can definately say the upgrade was well worth it. 2 days later, system locks up. Have to use the reset button on the case, the old 3 fingered windows salute wont work.

Screen, keyboard, and mouse all lock. Pressing the power button breifly normally gets XP to close down, doesn't work.

Checked the seating, and reseat the GPU - windows freezes in ~15min
Repair install - same again
Total reinstall - same again
Change back graphics card, reinstall - same again
Swap cables - same again
Changed mouse, keyboard, used the PS2 ports instead of USB,
Removed the network cable, used the other network port (board has 2), used a different router,
Changed power cords, monitors, taken out of case and put into the MB box,
Added the wireless card (normally installed in an old dell I have),
Changed the DVD to another, and even to a CD reader, put in a floppy, taken it out, taken that out,
Tried a different HDD to install on,
Taken out everything unneeded (inc case fans, as case now open) - same every time.
I have tried installing different release drivers, I have reflashed the BIOS, changed and rechanged BIOS settings (they are now back to what they were),

I have used CMOS reset, check the MB for burst/leaky caps, added and removed front panel cables (pwr/reset/usb/etc)

I have swapped out everything except RAM, CPU, and PSU from this MB
Ran memtest86, and WD hard drive diagnostics. They come back 100% fine.
DMM results on the PSU are well within normal. (bench size Fluke not sure of model, is a guys from UNI I borrowed)

It will still run for about 15min then lock up.
I have probably reinstalled XP about 30 times, (it takes a grand total of 17min and a few sec on the machine, from pwr on to 1st actual logon. Depending on the speed of my input)

The bit that has me completly stumped.

I have now installed Fedora 7 (64bit) and been up 3 days now. Beryl, DVD's, divx, mp3, FLAC, CD's all fine. Haven't had even as much as a force quit for an application.

Problem: The Boss (my better half) requires XP put back on.

Any suggestions?

I think it's the PSU fault. How old is it?

Can you put your old card back in and check it? I missed the unknow PSU. It might boot the old but lack the stuff to boot the new...?

The PSU is ~6months old.
Silverstone ST405

Checked with DMM - running 12-12.01V, 3.29-3.3V, and 5V flat.
Using a Fluke multimeter, a PSU attachment, and it was calibrated ~2 days beforehand (Its normally used for electrical work in and around firestations). Its about as accurate as it gets.

I've tried the old card. I set the board back up to the exact same hardware and BIOS config as it used to be. It still failed. The install goes perfectly, its just once its loaded.
What gets me is that Fedora 7 works perfectly. Its what I'm using now.

I think I might have to try another XP disk, which I can get for $12.50 NZ, sometime the coming week.

Well I've sat here for twenty minutes Noob, can't think what's eating up your success... sorry. But if you cards happy in Fedora, it pretty much has to be XP related doesn't it?

Thats what I'm thinking.

Has to be driver or XP related. Pretty sure the drivers are fine - same drivers I have been using happily for several months (downloaded onto CD).

XP installs have to be one of the most boring things, and it keeps asking for data to be input.

Unless its the hardware gods - they have decided MS = NEVER

Tried the original (that came with the MB, etc) which I know work perfectly (previous working install), and the latest. I can't find any others, except for a couple which I already know are buggy. I have also tried the drivers that MS try and foist upon me.

I have also tried no drivers. Just playing solitaire and the same will happen.

What I will do is get a new CD (hate shelling out money for what I have, but its cheaper than getting a replacement disc), and let people know whats happening.

Thats the thing. I have tested everything.
But I am getting some new RAM hopefully Monday so will test that, and will try and borrow another PSU, I am unable to swap out the MB or the CPU though.

I'll even try and find another completly different PC and install it on there - just to see what happens. The GX110 is setup and I don't want to stuff with my ubuntu on it, so will have to try another one.

I was kinda hoping someone might've experienced something similar. Or at least have gotten a kick out of the fact my hardware seems to be anti-microsoft

Off to bed - its almost 4am here
take it easy all!

I wonder if XP is working the processor harder than Linux? Truly a bizarre malady, hope the culprit is detected soon!

Ok I have now reset the heatsink on the CPU and northbridge.
Tried another PSU, and all seems fine - in Linux.

Moved from Fedora to ubuntu, due to many how-to's being pointed to the ubuntu forum.

It looks like a media problem for windows. I haven't been able to try the disc on another system, but should be getting a new disc today.

On another note, anyone know a good stress testing suite for Ubuntu? I really want to test the system before I go and reformat again.

installing XP doesn't get better over time

meaning?

The alternative dell rubbish PSU, ran the comp but XP still crashed. Ubuntu didn't.

I'm thinking XP media problem now, even though it installs fine.

For me PSU have always been mysterious and flaky things....I guess I just don't have confidence that it's the XP disk...you maybe right, I 've just not had this happen...and if it could have...! ":O}

If XP fades as a source of the problem, I'd dig up a PSU, a good one and see what's what. Best of luck!!

I hate this stuff when it happens! Spent most of yesterday trying to figure out why Fedora would not load from disk and install on my harddrive.... J-mircon IDE setting in the bios, while I'm NOT even using it!! it must active something for my PCI IDE card the drive runs off of... if you never give up, though your cause is lost, you can never be defeated...":O}

Are you installing all of the MS updates?

If not do,and if so don't. I think that makes sense.

It does.
Tried both ways, and even only selected ones.

Well I got the new media yesterday. Popped it in, and it installed. This morning - still running prime95 ~ 6hrs, and no errors. All the updates (92+ security updates since SP2), and the original driver disc that came with the MB.
Using the 8600GT and the latest nvidia drivers.

Funny thing, my old media runs perfectly in an old dell GX240 I managed to get working.

So mayby a corrupt sector on the disc? pertaining to a specific windows driver? Thats about the only thing I can think of.

I know what you mean. Sometimes I may be able to fix it, but I couldn't tell you why or how the fx worked. It would have to be the gremlins.

UPDATE:

I installed itunes, and CRASH. safe mode, take out all the services and junk it installs, gets me back into normal mode, but its unstable.

XP 64 bit came in the same pack so I installed that. iTunes now complains like a stuck pig, but hell windows is stable.

just have to associate itunes to the autoplay options, and associate with the ipod, the I can remove all the garbage its decided I needed.

I hate itunes and quicktime, its like a virus. I told it NO to several options, but got them anyway. If it crashes again, linux stays on, and my partner can get herself a laptop, and do whatever she wants to it, unsupported by me.
