No Internet Connection

while checking one of my folding rigs, I was greeted by a message and an
icon on the the task bar.
"SYSTEM ALERT!" the system has detected a number of ACTIVE Spy-
ware Apps. click the Icon to get rid of unwanted Spyware by downloading
an up-to-date solution.
I wanted to know who/what/where this was coming from and remove it, so
of course, I clicked on the Icon. it led to a web page selling antispyware at
'allsecure....... after closing the browser, I started looking for ways to remove the offending app.
I went to 'Spybot S&D' but couldn't get the new
updates to download. I installed Norton IS Suite and while trying to get the
newest deffs, I stared to get error msgs. 'I.E. has generated errors and
must close' so now, NO internet. even FireFox fails to start.
now I need some help with this. I am not opposed to a format and re-install
of OS(Linux UBUNTU) and no more XP for this folder!!!

Ron

sys restore failed to restore my computer to 3 of 3 restore points for
September. how about a repair from the CD? me thinks a virus has the
best of my machine. all attempts to install antivirus software and/or
download updates, fail. I haven't had this problem for many years and
it took a complete format/reinstall to get my computer back.

Take a look here and see if that matches what you've come across.

You can do a winsock repair. There is a little utility that will put all you settings back to default. It has worked every time for me. I do not have a link but you can google it.

exactly!!! too late as I have started a format/reinstall. thanks loads for the
linkage. like I said, haven't had this sort of thing for so long I only know one
way to fix it.
do you recommend disabling system restore for ever? I will make sure my AV
is up to date too.

have it on another (single core) box. and don't see any issues. however, on
this dual core rig, I was having issues with the on-board graphics driver and
nic. caused me a few too many hours of messing about. so I took the 'easy'
way out. I think vid & nic cards will make it easier to get Ubuntu or Fedora
working on this rig. maybe even dual boot?
