Good luck with MSI!
Most probably, they will run it through some internal testing process and then sell it as 'open packaging' if it appears to be functional. You would not BELIEVE the amount of returns that an outfit like NewEgg gets that are the result of human stupidity rather than faulty hardware. In addition we all know about the 'magic' hardware that works in one machine but not another.

Tell me if this is a honorable method.

I am going to buy an identical board. I will use it in the build so I can get this delivered. I will use the packaging from this board to return the old for either a refund or a replacement. A replacement would be fine as I am am sure I will have another build to do soon.

Any thoughts......Here come the ethical police....LOL

I don't see anything wrong with that. Newegg gets their money, you get a warranty for a board you have already paid for.

That doesn't seem unethical to me, you are buying another one of these mainboards, they get two sales. Let's hope that the new m'boards are less troublesome than the one that's giving you grief!

Update, well sort of.

I received the new board and mem. I even ordered a different brand to make sure it was not a compatibility issue. It is still doing the same thing. I mixed and matched the old and new and still the same. Tried yet another PSU still hard lock and reboots. I am left with nothing else but the CPU. I even removed the HDD and booted to a live linux CD. It did stay running for a bit. That was until I started doing anything. 5 minutes and hard lock.

I watched temps and they are so low it is not normal. I will order another and then RMA this one. All I need then is a case, PSU, HDD, DVD RW and I have a new machine. Might give it to my wife. It is pretty zippy when it is running.

Man, I must be tired, I am rambling...

Anyway, if anyone has any other input, do tell.

Thanks guys and good morning from me...

Have fun with her as soon as you get a working CPU

I am taking it over to a friend that has another AM2 system. We are going to play swap and go. Swap it out till it goes...

I will report back....

Honestly, I have never seen a CPU act like this.

Does this qualify as a titanic tussle? Leaning toward "yes."

Not like we had anywhere else to go...

I changed everything else. I guess I could have had another bad board...

I have NEVER had a CPU act like this before. It definitely stumped me.

I picked up a new CPU. Al is well in the computer world now. Had to reload the os as it was quite corrupt from the computing errors.

I am still working on sending the bad CPU back for RMA. Their online form all but sucks. I will call the 800 number and get it done.

Thanks for all the help and support guys.

I will actually be delivering this nightmare of a PC tonight.

It goes in a hair salon of all things. They run this program called Salon Pro. It is pure satan incarnate into code. I have already contacted tech support because the last time I had a run in with this software, it nearly got the best of me. Very flaky to install and setup.

This will be replacing the main front desk machine that also serves the database to another machine. Both are socket A. This should be quite a boost. AM2, X2 3800, DDR2 mem. SATA2 HDD.

Considering it's going into a hair place... yeah... it's going to need to be cleaned. And probably often.
