If the drive is using NTFS, that can cause permission problems. XP can take a while to process data for moving when copying larger (>1GB) amounts of data over USB, as well as if they are on the same IRQ as another device, copying files over ~700MB can be a bit flakey. I use a live CD of nix that supports NTFS, or ERD Commander (still avaliable in some places as a free download). Never had a problem with these, including USB drives.

Only rembered as I had a similar problem with my brothers laptop. He was looking at things he should've known better not to. XP wouldn't load - even in safe mode, and a repair didn't work. ERD commander allowed me to boot up, and just copied the important info (UNI work and photos - left the pics and videos behind) onto an iPod, USB pendrive and USB portable HDD (each only had a small amount of room). Format, reinstall and all is well in the world. For some reason the live CD (knoppix) wouldn't detect all the hardware, I might have to look for an updated live CD of something with NTFS read/write support and a GUI integrated.
