Red face Not paying attention

I think I cooked my 850 Tbird.
I, in between other projects, was putting together another machine and, knowing the Tbird wasn't going to need the HD HSF, I put a OEM one on it. There is where I wasn't paying attention. My lg HSF has a step on the base to clear the step on the back of the socket.
It only fits that one way and I suppose I just got used to it. The OEM doesn't have that step. When installed, it wasn't in contact with the CPU core. It ran for about 5 seconds-It doesn't run anymore. Pay attention, stupid!
Not a great loss but why couldn't have been the Pentium 2?
Does anyone have an Athlon XP sitting around for a folding machine?

Unfortunately, that's all it takes to burn up a CPU is 5 seconds or less not having a HS on it when it's turned on.
Fortunately, I've never made that mistake. My current processor is over $300.

I use the cloud with silver linings axiom with most mishaps. I bought that CPU many yrs ago. OC'd it to just shy of 1gb (almost exactly at 1gb it would start to hiccup) with cheap memory. It would run well at 950.
I used & abused it for a long time.
The silver lining is I learned a valuable lesson on an old, tired CPU that was probably happy to be put out of it's misery. RIP

As we commit this CPU to the hallowed ground, Amen.

Ya know booman, I started this reply with full intentions of giving you a ration of it for not reading the post and not knowing what what CPU was what. As soon as I started to type it out, I realized I didn't know any more where these things had come from! (except for the AMD 233 you sent-now that thing is useless! Thats why I remember it.) I've got Pll's & lll's Slots, one socket but I've forgotten what it is. Maybe that one was Yours? It's resting in a dead board.) There's a celeron and another Tbird, but I'm a bit motherboard shy at the moment. That will change soon. If things go as planned (do they ever?) I'll have 3 rigs folding. An Intel E4300 and 2 AMD 2400's an XP and a Sempron. That be cool!

OH-the answer to your question-I haven't a clue!
