help and upgrade

first i got this old ide hdd from a friend that whats something data off it because it apparently went bad on them. so i figured that i could plug it into just about any computer and access the drives data if it was the os that was messed up(99% of the time thats the problem). so i try playing with the jumpers on all of my computers to try to get this to work but i get nothing. i could never get the drive to show up in bios. but 2 out of 3 of my computers have ide boot drives so this makes things a little difficult. so on the only sata boot drive computer i set the broken ide drive to slave and hooked it up to the ide ribbon. now for the first time the drive comes up in bios. great! i go in and set the order of the drives. and proceed to boot into windows. after get to the windows screen with the blue bar going back and forth i get a system hang. that blue bad goes back and forth for what must have been hours. but i keep retrying since now i can see the light at the end of the tunnel and when it finally get into windows i goto my computer and there is only one drive. i have run out of ideas on this one. three computers later.

and secondly i need a cd/dvd sata drive that can burn cd's and dvd's fast and was wondering whats a good company. my last ide drive i just picked one at random and it happened to be a lite-on that broke shortly after and couldn't burn a dvd to save its like. so anyone want to recommend a good reliable drive thats sata, fast and burns cd's and dvd's?

LiteOn make some really good drives that can be picked up from any where pretty cheaply.

Now the HDD, does it show in device manager?

There is a device available that allows you to plug an IDE or SATA HDD in through USB, theyre reliable and pretty cheap. Sounds like the HDD may be totally cactus though.

It sounds like no partition. there are some apps you can DL that you can create a bootable cd and access the drive to partition and format it.

Don't most of your partioning tools do that?
And I think fdisk is an allmost sure fire hit.

Sometimes fdisk will not do it.

But to answer your question....yes.

i need data off the drive.

idea 1. could i try to install windows on it like a normal drive and just create a new partition with some of the free place on the drive. then after that couldn't i see whats on the other partition?

idea 2. use a bootable linux cd and get into the drive to save the files i need, just i dont really know how to use linux.

but both of these idea require that the drive been recognized in bios and thats becoming rare.

You need to say what you have done. The first move is to do a windows repair if possible-have you done this or tried to? if it didn't work, what was happening that stopped the repair? You need to tell us what you are actually doing and what the computer is doing.

tried to get the drive to be recognized in multiple computers by using jumpers and various wiring techniques and the only they that made any progress what the will of the gods to allow the drive to work that one time then i had to try 100 other things to get it to work. and when i worked (showed up in bios) i could never get windows to see the drive. the drive itself is some ones only os drive so it has stuff on it. i need some pictures off it. i tried repair but it cant see the drive either.
