PC wont boot

Hey guys

After i tried to insert a working IDE HDD into my previously working pc i bumped into some errors

ive 1 IDE HDD, 1 SATA HDD, 1 SATA cdrom connected to the pc
i hoped to add another IDE HDD
even with correct jumpers the HDD refused to show up in the bios yet worked fine in another pc. The pc then repeatedly booted without outputting a scream... this was solved with a bios reset

i removed the new hdd, and decided to leave pc as it was but after post when the hdd is selected to boot up windows the freezes, just a blinking underscore/curser if left.

if i set the first boot device to cdrom, it says "boot from cd rom" then the crdom spins but bypasses the inserted xp disk, and pc fails to boot further again.

if i remove everything but the hdd that has no effect, and if i remove everything but the cd rom, after the "boot from cd rom shows" and the cd rom spins up
"please insert system disk and press enter"

ive tried resetting the bios many times still get the check sum error.

what on earth can i do??
thanks for anyhelp

Sounds like you need to try a different BIOS reset

Unplug the PSU from the MB, take out the CMOS battery, and short the BIOS reset jumpers for 1hr+

Then put back the HDD's, etc that you want to use,
Check the jumpers, and the cable positions for the devices

Lastly boot into BIOS, making sure you have the correct order, and primary boot device.

If that doesn't work, post full specs of the machine, and HDD

and it worked! ...for 2 reboots then back to the same problem

however now the xp disk does boot up and go to the blue xp installation screen, when i try to select the disk to install it on i get this "windows has not detected a windows compatible partition on this disk, press enter to select another disk"

ive tried this with two HDD one sata and other ide.

fully system specs:
core 2 duo e4300 not (overclocked)
2gb (2x1) geil budget ram (pc6400)
ATI x1950pro
gigabyte DS3 rev 3 main board (965p chipset) F7 bios
1 x 320gb maxtor, 16mb cache, 7200rpm diamondmax 12 (sata 300)
1 x 40gb 2mb cache maxtor diamondmax 8 (IDE)
dvdrw drive (sata) samsung
xclio greatpower 550w

the HDD i tried to install to start with was a 80gb IDE seagate 7200.7

its about 18 months old, i did try a different battery with no luck

Looks like you need to do a BIOS update,

reset the same, and update the BIOS via floppy.

Make sure the same cables etc work in another machine.

If all that doesn't work, you may be looking at a MB problem

It might be worth zeroing the partition table (if you don't mind losing what's already on the hard disk!), which should restore it to a "virgin" state.

Send a message via MSN to Samuknow

Also you can boot to the cd and hit repair and type in fixboot at the prompt. That should fix the boot sector.
