Issues booting

Hi guys,

I have a machine which is having issues with the boot. It is a new build which we are using for testing.

The machine is configured with RAID 1, over 2x 1 TB SATA hard disks. When I install XP 64, the initial installation works fine, however, pretty quickly, during the installation of applications, the machine takes about 10 minutes to boot into Windows, or never at all.

During the first installation run, I used an XP64 SP1 disk, and the system was fine until I installed SP2, after this, they system went as above.

2nd attempt, I installed with an XP SP2 disk, and the quick format just stuck at 20%.

3rd attempt, I rebuilt the RAID, and the install went with out hitch.

Now I have started installing the applications, after a reboot, the system went back to the problem above.

When I boot the system into safe mode, it hangs while trying to load acpitabl.dat, which i understand is a SATA/RAID driver.

Tried doing a system restore, and this fixed the problem for the first reboot, and then went back to previous state.

Does anyone know the solution to this problem? This is the first machine out of 13, as we would really like to keep the RAID 1, as we have had quite a few hard disk failures this year which the RAID would have prevented.

The machine spec is:

Intel Core I7 2.93 Ghz
6GB DDR3
2x 1TB Western Digital Caviar Green
ASUS P6T motherboard
ATI FireGL V7700
Windows XP64

Thanks,

Kev

I have since taken the disks out of RAID, and the problem has sorted itself.

I would still really like to know the reason for this problem, as i said earlier, we have had quite a few hard disk failures this year, which RAID 1 would have covered us for...

Please help someone

XP 64 doesn't have raid drivers built in, so you will need to either slipstream them into the Windows disk or use a RAID driver floppy at the F6 prompt.

You can the driver at intel, grab the driver for 64 bit raid config floppy.

RAID drivers are already installed via f6 disk

If you are using 2 drives for RAID1, then it would be just as easy to have the second drive mirror the original drive. I do this with my server. Just having it backup each night can save a lot headache during hardware/software failures. The better solution would be to back up important data to a server, but with 13 machines that could be a lot of data for one server.
