Journey: Rebuilding a hard drive

Long story short, I dropped my netbook, no longer boots, hard drive arm is making a ticking noise.

I have two other working drives of the same model, so tomorrow I will be dismantling a good one and the wrecked one. Replacing the arm, and attempting to repair the drive.

9 times out of 10 I'd frown, swear and replace the drive. But of course I havent backed up Quickbooks this month because I have been away and I have now lost it.

:-\ Wish me luck!

LOL, thanks mate, that totally helped me save my data.

On a side note, drive worked for 8 minutes, 7 more than I needed to save Quickbooks.

Success yay!!

Awesome! glad you could get your data back. That was much easier than a "clean room" and a bunch of tools

Good work dude! Now that you've already figured out the hard part, you should read my Open Hard Drive Surgery article.

Nice rebuild there Gizmo!
I'd be afraid of ruining it by taking it apart, but then again
if it doesn't work to begin with there's no loss now is there! Worth the shot I guess...
When I was younger I was really good at taking stuff apart & putting it back together better than it was, but now I just don't have the confidence to do it as I just don't do that anymore.

Anyways, this is the main reason I preach over & over again to my friends to do regular backups to a separate drive. Something I do almost daily.

Ahh Gizmo, that explains it. I had read an article sometime ago about how to fix a hard drive, went looking couldnt find it again. Made it up as I went and it worked. Turns out the article I read sometime ago, was yours.

So thank you very much for saving my data!
