Well, the new one works fine without any extra lubrication.

The old one worked fine, if I got it to work once, it would carry on working for a few hours.

So, it's probably a fault with the laser or the optics. Struggling to change to blu-ray mode.

Quite a common problem on these particular parts.

The new slim consoles have twin lasers now.

The laser is a semiconductor device, similar in ways to an LED. Thus, if it works, it should carry on working fine (unless something catastrophic happens to it). I do wonder if the "zoom" part of the optics might be a problem, as it's a moving part.

Is about half the cost of getting someone else to fix it, in the case of this particular fault.

It's no more difficult than upgrading a PC CPU.

But, you do have to take some care, because the wires and connectors which connect things are fragile, compared to PC cables.

Also, leaving a disc in the drive, and dismantling the drive is a bad idea! I did this, and it took me some time to work out how to reassemble it with a disc loaded.

Interesting posts there, Danrok. Alas, our launch-day (March 2007) 60 GB PS3 started playing up on Saturday. I had been playing for a couple of hours when it suddenly refused to read the MW2 game disc any longer. Once it had cooled down for a couple of hours it would load a PS3 game again, but then would only work for about 10 mins. I tried it again today (having been cold for 24 hours) and it let me play one MW2 TDM before refusing to read the game disc. It still plays DVDs and PS2 games ok, so I'm guessing it's something to do with the BD lens.

I have ordered some isoproply alcohol (99%) to clean the lens with but am wondering whether the laser assembly itself might be shot as if the lens were only dirty, surely it wouldn't work at all rather than working until it's warmed up?

Anyway, if the cleaning doesn't work can you advise where to get a new lens assembly from? I'm a PS3 repair newbie, though I have built my own PCs before.

Many thanks
