Burnt HD PCB

Hi guys,

About 7 months ago, the PCB on one of my hard drives set on fire, and a little part of it got burnt. Didn't really have the need to fix it at that time, since all my files were backed up. But it seems I need that hard drive now. How would I go about recovering the hard drive?

I will post pix/model number/etc in a little while. But any help in the mean time will be appreciated.

You'll have to find a skragged drive with the same model. You MAY (probably WILL) have to find one with the same rev of firmware as well.

Odds are, this isn't something you can fix with parts from your junk box. If the drive PCB got burnt, then it is almost dead certain that there are components on the board that are also fried. Simply repairing the board will almost certainly not work (if you CAN repair it; it's almost certainly a multi-layer board, and figuring out what needs to be patched back together is likely to be a 'non-trivial' task).

Good stuff setting a hard disk on fire man, 95% of failures just entail the drive having errors or making a clicking sound and not being usable, getting some sort of smoke out of it deserves extra points.

I feel compelled to stoop to this level of humour. So here goes...

That's what she said.

Burning the PCB of even a 15k RPM drive is nearly a singular circumstance, how in heaven did you scorch yours? Day late dollar short, sorry.

Were you able to change out that PCB? If so, congrats!

I've managed to pull that off on 2 hdd's. one, a 40gig. the other was an 80gig. in both cases the
drives were well matched

I have 2 WD 250gig hdd's and would like to make one good drive out of them. sadly 1 is IDE , other is SATA.
I'll keep looking for a matching drive.
