Sweet! Good Deal.
I've never come to terms with all of Microsoft activations yet....
I was told you can activate an OEM key at least 3 times with swapped hardware. Then you have to call. But I always worry about swapping motherboards... So I hold on to my old motherboards just because Windows XP activates just fine on them.
As for retail windows, I have seen it activate just fine on 3 computers at the same time. So, I don't know what the limit is, just don't go activating windows for your friends with your personal retail version.

So, my HDD died. Took my portable HDD with backups and school work with it... Not happy.

Luckily I can recover the files off the portable HDD

yeah, my Primary drive on my PC died and when I went to reload the backup image on my portable HDD it didn't like it and screwed up the partition table. My portable HDD when plugged into a working computer shows all the partitions but I'm told by the OS that I need to format each of the disks for them to work.

ooh, thats not good
try going to Start, right-click My Computer and select Manage
Then go to Disk management.
You may be able to do a chkdisk to see if there are errors

Is this the same Western Digital from School?
My buddie Andrew was having all kinds of problems with that drive.
We found that the hard drive was fine but the enclosure has a connection problem.

No its not the WD. I left mine at school and someone jacked it. I tried the chkdisk but that didn't work either. I found some data recovery software that is working pretty well except that it takes forever.

that sucks! any time you leave anything at school... it gets ripped off.
Are you sure the drive is still working? does it make any "clanking" sounds?
Remember how sensitive hard drives are... one drop and its done

Had the same thing with my wife and a manual tranny.
Then we got the Benz and it has a tiptronic on it (automatic but you can bump the shifter to change gears) and I started using that. She loved it and asked if I would show her how to use it... I said no! Because you didn't wanna learn jow to drive a stick so I'm not teaching ya this, and if you mess around with it and blow the engine i$ going to be really pissed!
