I booted to the cd last night. That did not work. It did wreck my windows install and I had to setup my rig again. Good thing I have it down to an art. A little while later and all is good. I will try a DOS boot and try to fdisk the disk. I have an old rig I will try from instead of my main rig.

nothing worse than creating a password and forgetting it. my work requires me to have a password to
access the system. mine is 9 characters and been the same for six years.
I used Ultimate Boot CD and found one of the prog's that supported fdisk. an 'improved' or 'superior' version of fdisk.
at a time when nothing else worked, this one did the job.
of course, all data was lost. XP formatted the drive and all is good again!

Cool. I still have not been able to use the disk. I will give it a shot.

I have to add that I could not use another computer to fdisk the drive. the encryption was so good that
the hdd was only recognized by the laptop it came from! and it all started with a missing or
corrupt MBR.
the other hdd was missing ntlodr and without the password I couldn't run the rc. that drive was fdisk'ed
and put back into service as well.
I'm getting better at getting more mileage out of some hdd's.

Been very busy as of late. I will give this a try this week. Daughter has a choir concert tonight so no time there. Maybe tomorrow. Good thing this guy is out of town. LOL

Have you tried any one of the live cd rescue linux distros?

A few are:
BootMed - The Best Medicine for a Computer that Won't Boot, and other Ailments
Trinity Rescue Kit | CPR for your computer
SystemRescueCd

I have used Trinity Rescue Kit and System Rescue CD in the past to good effect. Though admittedly this was just bypassing the windows password and folder/file protection where a user can't do anything with the files on the disk.

At worst you should be able to do a low level format using fdisk. Unless of course the encryption doesn't allow HDD access without the key, then you would have to swap the platters over. Not something I would look forward to, thats the point where I give them their options, one being a data recovery specialist, the other the cost of a new HDD.

All three can be run from USB so you don't need to waste a CD on it. IMHO anyone doing this kind of work even for friends needs to have at least one rescue disk/USB like this, an old 2GB drive is normally more than enough to install these on.
