from wikipedia

"Although Concorde led directly to the introduction of a general noise abatement programme for aircraft flying out of John F. Kennedy Airport, many found that Concorde was quieter than expected,[34] partly due to the pilots temporarily throttling back their engines (known as "noise abatement" – spoken by the pilots as the command "Noise" during take off) to reduce noise during overflight of residential areas.[197] Even before the launch of revenue earning services, it had been noted that Concorde was quieter than several aircraft already commonly in service at that time.

The fastest transatlantic airliner flight was from New York JFK to London Heathrow on 7 February 1996 by British Airways' G-BOAD in 2 hours, 52 minutes, 59 seconds from takeoff to touchdown."

What I am thinking George is that by the time they were switching to supersonic the altitude would "anihilate" the boom for those on the ground.

That's possible yet le booms sonique are MIGHTY loud. It wouldn't surprise me if 727's were louder when taking off, what amazingly obnoxious ear drillers they were! Less than three hours from JFK to Heathrow that's pretty amazing. I remember flying the Atlantic took a long, boring time for tourist class.

Some whiz kids say that a bi-plane design will do away with sonic booms. Can't find the link, sorry, but it looks weird.
