usb crashing pc?

this is when i try to copy 2-4GB of data from a usb stick? iv tryed reinstalling drivers by uninstalling then restarting pc. did nothing to stop it? what is doing my head in is the randomness of this problem sometime copy with no problems then other times just freeze the pc i have to shut down and restart? iv tryed all usb slots the front of the case plus back of mob no luck. windowsxp using old driver year-2001-2002 but i cant find any new usb drivers? its though the copying process that it just hangs and freezes the pc? i have started to use teracopy but still freezes up? any view on what to try? the pc works fine apart from this tiny part?

I would check your formatting on the thumb drive and computer.
Usually thumb drives are formatted as FAT32 but it can only copy/paste files up to 2 Gigabytes.
If this is the case, try formatting the thumb drive as NTFS.
Also, is there enough space on your hard drive for the file?
I'm assuming "yes" because you would get a "disk full" error...

i cant formatt to NTFS as the ps3 can not see the stick?
im using the ps3 play tv and it all fat32 on the usb stick.
my hd has around 10GB free. im really not sure whats up with it. iv not heared of a 2GB limit on the fat32? i was under the standing that it was 4GB file limit. as the ps3 copy files of 3.5GB ok its only when i go above that it sometime stop with error.

You are right, I looked it up and the file limit is 4 Gigabytes.
Interesting...
I had no idea you were doing this on the Playstation.
I am not familiar with the limitations of Playstation and thumb drives.
Keep us updated when you figure this thing out...

I wonder if your PC has some kind of DRM rootkit installed on it?

Perhaps it thinks you are trying to copy some DRM protected files from your PS3.

Bit of a long shot, but it sounds like an odd problem.

my ps3 copy the files fine to usb stick. its getting the file on to my desktop pc which just freeze the desktop. what don't help is there is no help for epox mob. its something to do with the usb. i have been thinking of trying out a usb pci card. would that be completely independent of the on board usb? i use my new dell inspiron n5110 i5 laptop more but the dvd drive is just way to slow burning a 3GB file.
