Hard Drive Format Lost
I have a Maxtor 30gb hardrive that I have been using to store files for years. The system wants to format when I want to access it. I tried it in another comp and had the same issue.
I did recover the files using a recovery software so all is well in that regards. The Maxtor seems to be fine that is if I format it. Is there a way to restore the format without formatting?

Very often this is just due to a messed up partition table. Occasionally partitions can be brought back to life by deleting the partition and creating it again exactly the same size and exactly the same partition type, then rebooting without formatting. Or it could nuke all the data.

If you've got a backup of the files via that recovery s/w then I'd rely on that.

Thank you.
I was hoping for an easier way as I had to recover over 27gb of data.

There is a tool that will likely fix the problem, it is called Spinrite 6 and you can get it from Steve gibson at . It costs a good bit of coin but will fix even Linuz partitions plus a whole lot more.
