David Cancel, the CTO of the web market research firm Compete Incorporated, raised eyebrows at the Open Data 2007 Conference in New York when he revealed that many Internet service providers sell the clickstream data of their users. Clickstream data includes every web site visited by each user and in which order they were clicked....

As long as there is no personally identifiable information (and no security related information e.g. logins and passwords), I don't really see a problem with this. It would be no different than if a bus line dropped people off at the mall and someone tracked what stores the people from the bus visited.

As long as there is no invasion of privacy involved, I don't see a problem per se with the practice. However, as is noted in the article, it would seem reasonable for the ISP to disclose the fact that this information is being sold to third parties to its subscribers.

Who is it that is always talking about 'finding the middle way'?

If we are to start eliminating things based on the POSSIBILITY of them being abused, then we need to go back and rethink our whole approach to a great many issues. (Well, ok, we need to go back and rethink our whole approach on a great many issues anyway, but that is a whole 'nuther discussion.)
