multiple domains

I didn't know where else to put this...

If I wanted to buy a bunch of domains for my website (www.in-the-red.com) like:
redmusic.com
inthemusic.com
intheband.com
myredmusic.org
inthered.com
inthered.net

and as many other cheap domains I could think of.
Would google have a cow over this and ban my site from the search list?

I'm no authority on this, but I don't believe they would; I can't see why they would.

I was thinking that people may use this as a way to dodge paying google to be added to their search engine. But would google even care? I guess the question is... would it cost less to buy a bunch of domains that re-direct the user to the main site, or just pay google to add the main site to their search engine?

Pay? Why would you pay?

All you have to do to get listed in Google's search results is to get the Google robot to index your site. You can do that buy going here: http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl

Any URL posted in the forums will get picked up and added to all the main search engines.

There's no longer a need to submit. So, long as the crawlers find a link to the site somewhere, then it wil be added. Google does this very rapidly, these days!

Personally, I wouldn't bother registering similar domain names. I can't see what the gain would be.

If you want to get high in the results, the following are some of the factors which help:
  • Natrual links to your site from other sites with a good page rank
  • Unique content
  • Good quality content (no spelling errors, proper paragraphs, etc.)
  • Careful use of keywords with in the text, but not excessive use of keywords
  • SEF URLs
  • Site maturity (older sites rank higher)

Google gets wise to any cheating methods and may penalise for it.
