New Purdue University research shows steganography, long considered a minor threat, may be on the rise

Until recently, steganography, the stealth technique of hiding text or images within image files, has mostly been considered too complex -- and conspicuous -- to be much of a threat. But some forensics experts now worry that the bad guys are starting to use the tactic more frequently, especially in child pornography and identity theft trafficking.... Front Page

Let's throw in buzzwords like "child pornography" and "identity theft" in the first paragraph...

There's usually easier ways to get information in and out of places than steganography - like SSL or USB drives.

So this is more a potential threat publicized; rather than an rapidly evolving threat?

There was a study at the University of Michigan, where they found one image that contained hidden data. It so happened that this one image was part of an interview, where someone was demonstrating the use of steganography.

Why go to the trouble of hiding your data in images/movies (and grossly expanding the space it takes) rather than just sending it in encrypted format?

Thanks Aedan. All to often I'm in no position to ascertain for myself how seriously to take these threats.
