Sony BMG is no stranger to piracy. As one of the most vocal supporters of the RIAA and IFPI antipiracy efforts, the company has some experience hunting down and punishing consumers who don't pay for its products. The company is getting some experience on the other side of the table, however, now that it's being sued for software piracy....[Front Page...]

Why we can't get Kids to listen:

"The Business Software Alliance, however, believes that up to 47 percent of the software installed on Sony BMG's computers could be pirated."

Servers in most organisations are often administered by not only their employees, but many third-parties.

It's entirely possible that a third-party could install pirated software, and charge the customer for a legit version, pocketing the cash themselves.

Of course, it's entirely Sony's responsibility to ensure that all their software is legit.

Thanks for bringing that into better focus for me Danrok...I hadn't considered that...

BTW.... isn't that the most popular defence in a lot those DRM cases? ":O}

Yes, but don't forget that in a lot of those DRM cases, the accused is already known to be a pirate, we just have to prove it in a court of law.

Obviously, someone like Sony would never stoop to software piracy, so it HAD to have been an accident.

I can guess at how they arrived at 45%!

65% Sony propritary software....so that leaves "Up to 45% pirated".

I know of plenty of enterprises that have pretty much completely outsourced their IT. The servers and the software running on them is completely managed by the third party. That does mean that the third party is responsible for licensing too.

Outsourcing such things doens't always bring good. I'm aware of at least two instances where things haven't gone well. In one instance, the outsourcing meant no security (Security's not in your contract, that'll be an extra few million please). The other 'recycled' machines that had been hacked back within the organisation, but without bothering to wipe and reinstall the OS. (IE, left the hacking tools/backdoors installed on the systems)
