Gamers fight back against lackluster Spore gameplay, bad DRM

Written by Daniel
Monday, 08 September 2008
Spore, after more than 10 years of development time, is finally available for the PC and Mac.
By Ben Kuchera | Published: September 08, 2008 - 10:54AM CT

The game comes from the mind of the talented Will Wright, the man who gave us The Sims and the original SimCity titles. No matter what people think about the actual game play the story now centers around the DRM scheme EA built into the title, and a grassroots movement has begun to tell gamers just how bad the DRM sucks. The method? Bombing the comments on Amazon.com. [Frontpage...]

If I was the game developer, I'd sue EA for creating a hostile climate for my creation...

Bite the hand that feeds you?

Thanks for the post btw. I was at EB games this weekend and they were running video's pimping the game. It's not one I would get but one my kids might want. I wouldn't wanna be stuck with a 3 install limit as I'm going to be revamping the pc's at home soon.

This kind of short sighted protection happens in many fields. Management at what ever level has made the decision that 'they' are realy good and this is an example of it. Compliment each other and inform higher managment what has been done and how much money has been saved.
Now they are in a box with no doors. Pride, ego, fear, and maybe their carrier depends on this, or is percieved to. There will be no changes because nothing is wrong.
The fact that the paying customer is the only one getting screwed is of no importance.
Our stupid gun laws are another example. God forbid that the public see a law maker apear to be soft on crime
by makeing gun laws that make sence. So those won't change. Bad guys will have guns any time they want them. Good guys are going to find it difficult. Makes sence to me!lol

I don't think this is just about pirating.

I think we can safely assume that game, music, and video publishers don't like the 2nd-hand market. It drives down the price of new games.

A 3 or 4 maximum install limit, means you won't be able to sell the game when you've finished it, or become bored with it.

Thus making a pirated copy far more desirable in every way I can think of than the original...now there's a marketing strategy with BALLS! LOL

What these ...people have to realize is that pirates are just like any other competitor. They want your customers. They are willing to substitute personal risk (fines imprisonment) for your overhead expenses and compete with you head to head in every market.
... you are making this to easy for them!

Now they have a BETTER product than you do at a better price and bough from some one the customer likes better than you. Keep this up and you'll decide the only way to compete is for you to go out of business... not a bad thing...all things considered...

I bought this game. I like it, but it's not something I'd turn my PC on to play ESPECIALLY.

Don't get me wrong, the concept is awesome. My sisters thoroughly enjoy it, so I think I'm just going to install it on their machine too. =)

Side note; 10 years in the making? Are you serious?

They may have spent the first 8 years trying to see ahead to what a game would look and play like in 10 years?

Arrow But wait! More Spore Surprises!!!

EA Admits That You Can Only Have One Spore Player Per Install
from the and-it-lied-in-the-manual dept

Things aren't getting much better for EA since critics of its overly annoying DRM on the new video game Spore expressed their displeasure in droves on the Amazon page for the game. Now, Consumerist alerts us to another, related, issue that is pissing off many of those who did buy the game: you can only have one player account at a time. That means that if you live in a multi-person household, and multiple people would like to play the game themselves... EA says you need to pay up for another $50 license. Of course, if the game didn't have DRM that wouldn't be a problem.

Even worse, the manual for Spore says exactly the opposite:

"You may have multiple Spore accounts for each installation of the game."

Users, however, have been complaining that doesn't seem possible, and while it took a while, an EA rep finally admitted "our bad":

That section in the manual was a misprint and will be corrected in future printings of the manual. There is one Spore registration/account per game/serial code so you are correct in that you cannot make multiple accounts at this time.

This isn't exactly the best way to win fans over to the game, is it?

Less people will purchase the game and the software crackers will be having a cold one laughing their butts off.

This is surely intentional.

Testing and probing. See how it pans out, by doing a real world test...
