Symantec To Buy VeriSign's Authentication Business For $1.28 Billion

VeriSign will refocus business on Internet infrastructure, naming services
VeriSign, one of the best-known names in computer security, today took a step away from the security business by selling its authentication services business to Symantec for $1.28 billion.

Owch. Can't say I care for either of them to be honest, but I'm not convinced that SYMC are the best people to run a CA.

Verisign always struck me as being competent, but quite proud of their stuff. Symantec, well, I haven't been impressed with their offerings in any realm for a long, LONG time.

There's something more behind the scenes here; there's GOT to be.

Verisign indicate that the authentication stuff is 39% of their business, and Symantec called Verisign "the leading provider of digital authentication services".

Now, if you're the market leader in a segment that is over 1/3 of your total profit, why would you give that up? Something doesn't smell right.
