If I get this right, the people who performed this "review" managed to demonstrate that if you disable most of the features in antivirus software, it doesn't work as effectively?

On the other hand, antivirus software is only one component in the defence-in-depth scheme of things. It's usually wise not to rely on a single control point to protect you. Most catastrophic events are usually a number of control point failures, of which any one could have stopped the event from occurring...
