Tech Insight: Retooling Vulnerability Scanning, Penetration Testing For IPv6

Traditional host discovery via network scanning won't work with IPv6, but alternative methods are available

IPv6 brings some welcome security and other features, but there are some 'gotchas' for IP professionals that may not be immediately apparent.

Rather a light article that makes a big deal out of how large an address space would have to be scanned to identify if a host is there or not on IPv6.

What it misses out is that this problem already exists with IPv4! Simply pointing a scanner at an address block is not the best way to identify what hosts are present. The suggested remedies in the "insight" are far from usable - NDP is only useable when you're on the same network segment, which is usually not the case. I've yet to come across an organisation that even uses network data flow (NDF) information, let alone will provide access to it. NDF only provides you with information about hosts that have been talking - that isn't necessarily the case, especially with hosts that have been forgotten about...
