Alexa

I just ran ad-aware and found Alexa on my system, I didn't think
to check it out and removed it. Any one know what it is? Also found 2 cookies that were doing a little spy work.

Welcome to AOA Forums, pappypete!

Years ago, Alexa was a useful prog for "looking ahead" and finding what a Web site had to offer. It presented this info in thumbnail form. This was good if you had dial-up connection. You could see a 'sketch' of what was on the site, without waiting a year for it to load.

Alexa contained spyware. I got rid of Alexa because it bugged me. At that time, I had no idea what spyware was, some shortcoming of Alexa made me dump it.

Flash forward about three years. According to SpyBot--Search and Destroy(it's available in AOA Files. I LIKE SpyBot--Search, etc.) the Alexa key found in Win98SE's and XP Pro's registry is not spyware. It simply sits there, doing nothing, waiting patiently for Alexa to be installed. It is not in itself spyware of any kind.

Thank you "cloasters" for the very informative post. It was more
information than I was able to find.
