just got photoshop 7 omg

hi all!!
i just got photoshop 7 and dont even know where to start! this thing is huge and i am so lost!!!
i never have worked with anything this big(confusing)before.it will be months before i can figure it out, i didnt realy need it but a local shop was going under and had it for $300.00 U.S. and i've see it at bestbuy for $600 plus. so i grabbed it and wow! it looks like it can do pretty much everything. anybody else have this monster? and if so any word of wisdom on what not to do?
thanks!!
brian770
oh ya, i see that there is a new version out called photoshop cs, is there a big difference between the two? and that price at best buy, i saw that a year ago, did i get a good price on mine or did the price on "7" drop alot with the relese of "cs" and i got shafted?

There are some differences between CS and 7. However, both of them are equally powerful and complex.

Photoshop takes a lot of learning, and you will find that there are things you didn't know even after using it for a year! Don't worry about the complexity - you need to start simple and build you way up. There are many hints, tips and tutorials on the web for Photoshop, but some of them are pretty complex. See if you can find something basic and work through it until you understand exactly what's going on!

Yeah, there isn't much difference from 7 to CS. I do prefer CS though, but ver 7 is fine too.

There are all sorts of things that you can use Photoshop for. Let's see..... where would I begin? I guess one of the first things I learned to use is the magnetic lasso. You can do some quite interesting things with that. Just start to fool around with the different tools and effects and you'll be fluent in Photoshop in no time. I assume that you didn't get Illustrator with that package, is that correct? I love illustrator equally as much as Photoshop. In fact, yesterday I was hard at work on a couple of pictures for posters that I intend to post up at my school.

They went on a poster encouraging people to vote. Those posters don't get torn down quite as quick as the partisan ones. Plus, lots of young people don't seem to see the imporance of voting. College campuses have a big kick starting about now to get people to vote, so I figured I'd help out. Plus I already had one of those done, mine as well make another and turn it into a project.

EDIT: Though people do seem to like to draw on their chosen candidate's opponent.

See, this is one of my peeves. Partisan or not, whether you think the opposing party's representative is a complete idiot and their platform is a load of poo or not, there should be a certain amount of civility in public discourse. Because we've forgotten how to be civilized, we can't make any headway on the issues of the day. And both parties are about equally bad in doing it; just pick a particular day and flip a coin. And our 'Schools of Higher Learning' are NOT helping this out, because they refuse to teach their students how to think for themselves. It's much easier to teach a student to memorize what you want them to than it is to actually try to teach them to think.

Arg! I could go on and on about this, but I'll stop now. I've got work to do.

I actually think that is a rather simplistic view. There are over 2.4 billion possible photo alterations available in photoshop (Andy Anderson, consultant to Adobe, writer of numerous tips and turorials on Photoshop, Ph.D in physics) so saying you can be "fluent" in it in such a short time is a little deceiving.

I think you can do stuff with it pretty fast. I say you can comp photos with it in fifteen minutes. To truly be able to create original, stunning work will take much longer.

I would suggest getting a tips and tricks book by Anderson, and just start working through his examples. He outlines things pretty well, talks you through it, and this will give you good experience working with the tools and learning the basics. What you do from there is really up to you, but dont think you will learn Photoshop in a day or two, it is a professional, high end package, so it will take time to learn.

Oh heck, I'm sure I don't know half of the things that I can do with photoshop. Just the other day I found out that you can stitch together a collage with CS. It just depends on what you want to do with the program. I can put together several photos and look like they belong there, I can change settings to make a photograph better, etc. I know how to do a multitude of things with photoshop. However, I constantly come across things that I want to do but don't know how. Simply searching for a couple minutes on the internet yeilds a multitude of websites dealing entirely with neat things to do with the program. In saying that he'll be fluent in no time, I simply meant that he'd know where things were, what different filters did and lose the general sense of being overwhelmed. As for their being 2.4 billion possible alterations, I believe it!
