LOL no, but it's a good idea

Used flash synched at high shutter speed, lets you use a smaller aperture and gets rid of the shakes.

those were taken with a canon 20D and 100mm F2.8 macro lens.

But don't fall into the trap of thinking good camera equals good photos. I have plenty of crap I've taken with exactly the same set up

Are the flies dead or alive? I can't believe you got that close to a live fly, or was the tripod setup and the flower as bait?

Good question

The first is dead, look at the damage to it's right eye. The second one is alive, taken later in the day as it's cooling down and they're not so active. It's a crop of the full size version, the end of the lens was about 15cm away from it. I'll see if I can find the original and post it.

And both were hand held using shutter speed of about 1/320 and an aperture somewhere between F10 and F14, can check if you want.
