TIME Magazine: Best photos of 2005

I find it very disturbing, to the point of tears, that more than 50% of these photos depict death. I found myself removing a bit of excess moisture from my face as I went through these.

I'm not sure they would be my choice of "Best" but most are pretty dramatic.

damn I counted 3 about hope, love or life. The rest destruction or death.
Those 3 were ranked some of the bottom of those photos.

I am saddened by the fact that this death and destruction is so glorified, that it is decided that it is "the best" with photography.

Where are:
Families reunited for christmas - travelled half a world to come home
Wolf and her cubs in snow
Morning sunrise over national park

or something like that??

Those so called best photos is why I no longer watch the news, read the newspaper, or get periodicals like that. If I hear about something and it interests me, I will look it up.

Agreed! those pics made me puke because someone could think those photos were good. I don't disagree with journalists filming disasters or human problems...but I can't even think that some morbid pictures can be the best pics from 2005...

As with all art, it may be seen and judged in many different ways. Photo journalism is almost a school of it's own.
In my country a single photo change all our laws and many of our attitudes. It is true that the change didn't go as deep into the human heart as it did into the laws that regulate the heartless. But that is not to be expected

I have searched in vain for the "jewel in the crown" the Photo most given credit for a transformation in the way America saw the civil rights movement and the way America was seen by the world. I've included two other powerful and transforming photo's to stand in it's place.

What the the photo journalist is saying, it seems to me is this.

"I know this is unbearable to see. If you don't want to see it, don't look away, change the world."

Some photo's have said this so clearly that world had no choice but to comply....

In the words of the Civil Rights movement; "tell it like it is, just tell it like it is!" First screamed out by a young collage girl as was being beaten with batons by the police, another unforgettable image I could not find.

Notice that the Marcher doesn't adopt a defensive position, but allows himself to take the full force of the attack.

Just looking through, I must say that the pictures are indeedy mostly depressing and centered on destruction, although I do like the 12th picture - to me it conveys a sense of humanity and of movement.

I also found picture 17 moving, and enjoyed the composition of the image.

Picture 23, reminded me deeply of the horro that we as men can enflict upon each other, even though we are all the same, and all equal, we persist in fighting and destroying the things the we need and hold dear. How long before we either burn out or drop our differenaces once and for all?

The Picture of Pope John-Paul I found to be very interesting, through its composition but also because it was the first showing of any form of religion in any of the photos.

Heh, so, let that be a warning to all of you! Never be a Media student!

Few of those pictures are there for their artistic merit.
