I saw it on Nvidia front page and I wonder what is all about. After seeing the results I must say it looks impresive and I will try it this evening !

Sorry to be a bit noob here, but what exactly is it? A renderer? A modeling program?

From what I understand, it's a rendering uutput program.

Gelato is basically a means to render 3d meshes and textures.

When i first read the page, i thought it was a modelling program but now i realise i need one of those to be able to use it. meh, i'm too lazy.

So the idea is that it's faster to render on dedicated 3d hardware, as opposed to a CPU?

Nope Gelato existed before nVidia. nVidia just took over it.

There's no difference in the way it works, but it is free.

Gelato is to Maya as Microsoft Picture viewer is to Photoshop.
