Just been out and have made this photo.

I took 3 shots in quick succession, 1 correctly exposed, 1 overexposed and 1 underexposed.

Then I converted the 3 .RAW files to 3 .tiff files. Then used Photomatix to increase tone detail. Followed by a few adjustments to contrast, etc. in Paint Shop Pro.

Instead of using 3 shots and .tiff files, Photmatix can get almost enough detail from a single RAW file. The result is always better using 3 seperate shots. But, only a RAW file can be used as for creating a pseudo HDR image. A single RAW file is handy if there is movement in the shot, because the object will move and ruin the result if you were to take 3 photos.
