Photoshop heading online... for free?!

From the Frontpage:

Adobe announced plans to offer a version of Photoshop, hosted online for free access to all within six months.

Following the recent trend of releasing web hosted office apps by Google and other online players. The hosted version of Photoshop is part of a bigger plan to expand on free hsoted applications, it'll be interesting to see how it pans out, especially given the RRP of the full, shring wrapped version of Photoshop.

An office app over the net is one thing, I mean we all have bags of processing and bandiwdth going unused for such a mundane task.

But a photo manipulation app means cpu cycles, memory and scratch files, something not well suited to being a remote app. Now if we're talking about basic cropping etc.. for sticking a photo up on the net quickly, yeah sure it might be handy, but I don't see even novices giving up locally run photo apps for a while yet.

That is unless all the processing is done there side at a speed competative with a well specced system, in which case it would be a great tool for those wishing to do resource intensive manipulation from any location regardless of the spec of the system they are using.

But how cost effective can they provide both an application and system resources?

How does security look? I mean experience tells us that that security is unlikely to be a major consideration for providers.... How safe an undertaking will this be compared to working off line at home or office?

I guess much of the processing will be done on your PC, via Java Script and Flash?

Take a look at this:

Click on create and play with the colour wheel. It does work nicely.

Scripting based processing for something quit resource hungry? Where do I sign up

If this we're a true remote app I could see the appeal.

On second thoughts, I can imagine that the GUI and some processing would be handled via scripts. Any serious processing, i.e. filters, would possibly be done by the remote server.

I can't see that this will be much like the real PS product, just a glorifed photo editor/album.
