S-Video capture to PC from PS3 - poor quality

I've just hooked-up my PS3 video output to a WinTV-USB video capture device. The captured video looks really bad, mono with coloured artifacts. See the attached capture.

I'm using a Sony PS3 component cable to connect to the S-Video in port on the WinTV-USB.

Any ideas on how to get this working?

Are you sure that both ends are using svideo? Those artifacts are common when one end is svideo and the other end is using composite.
Do you really mean component cable, or do you mean composite cable?

Also, if you're using a composite cable, and you're connecting to an SVideo port, what are you using to go between the two?

A component cable is a PS3 thing, just what Sony calls it. Same as this one:
Walmart.com : Sony S-Video Cable PS3 : Accessories

Has a non-standard connector at one end.

Have tried setting the video output options to everything possible, e.g. s-video and composite. Video looks the same regardless.

That'll be the one that Sony calls an "S VIDEO Cable" then. This is the one that Sony call a "Component Cable"

I didn't fix anything. When I was previously choosing S-Video in the TV software on my PC, it clearly wasn't switching to S-Video, and today it is.

Posted a test video here:
GTA IV Video Capture from PS3 Test

There's no sound because I'm waiting on an adapter...

Quality should be good enough for some PS3 game reviews.

I wonder if there's any way we can clean it up further? The quality's okish, but I would have expected a bit better.

Any suggestions on how to go about that?

In video capture settings I can choose between MPEG1 VCD or MPEG1 2Mbit. Which should be better?

Anything I can do post-capture to clean it up?

Do you have no other choice for initial capture? It's usually better to capture to lossless and then convert after any production work. HuffYUV is free, and provides lossless compression. Obviously the original files will be bigger.

Also, see what you can do about brightness/contrast. You might also need to de-interlace, as the source material is interlaced (for S-Video).

Looks pretty good for standard-def.

What capture software did you use?

I used WinAVI Video capture, with a divx video codec.. Dscaler works pretty well for RAW capture. i'll see if i can tweak the quality later on and compare a RAW image thats been encoded and one thats captured with winAVI.

I'll try CoD4 this time

=)
