Microsoft frees up 3-D photo offering

Microsoft on Thursday announced a series of changes and updates to its Photosynth service, which offers users the chance to turn collections of still photographs into 3-D.

The new version of Photosynth uses Microsoft’s free Silverlight application, meaning that the resulting images will be viewable on all computer platforms, including recent Apple Macintoshes. For the time being, however, the free software needed to create Photosynths is only available for PCs running Microsoft’s Windows operating system.

Has anyone had a chance to see this work? What's the quality like?

It works very well.

It's strong point would be for use as a 3D reference of an object or structure. Very handy if you want to show someone on the other side of the world what something looks like, in detail.
