Question 8rda+ NB @ 50c (Is this common?)

I've posted about this b4 and it was suggested that my "hot" NB was due to stagnant air in the case.

Well I've modded my case and added a Zalman fan bracket + 80mm fan directly over the NB. I've also upped the voltage on the intake and expel fans back to 12v and as a result the CPU temp has dropped 5c down to 45c but the NB is still running at 50c.

This temp is consistent across all FSB settings from 133 up to 205 (the max I can get at the mo). I've flashed up to the new Beta 8rda2c05 (10/12/2002) Bios but am still getting the same readings from both Sandra and USDM.

My question is really am I the only person suffering from this and is it going to damage my board if I run at this temp for a long period of time.

Is the only solution to fit an active NB cooler?

Am I missing something really obvious?

As I don't have your MB I can't say, but if it was me I'd stick a cooler on it until I found out what was going on.

You are not alone. While I am no longer using this board, (see sig for details) My current board based on the same chipset gets quite hot as well. I don't think it is an Epox problem, rather a hotter running chipset than VIA. While it used to be unnecessary to actively cool VIA chips, we are learning that the NF2 chips run VERY warm and people are getting better results by actively cooling them. I just ordered my chipset cooler

When i touch my NB its bairly warm and thats the same for all fsb's ive tried upto 200, I use a Zalman flower cooler and the 92mm fan is blowing enough air over the cooler and northbridge to keep everything at a nice level see picture (sorry about quality it was taken with my mobile and the lighting wasnt the best!)

p.s. need to tidy up those cables abit more!"

Can I ask a question. Ignoring ALL software and other measuring methods - Can you put your finger on the northbridge and tell us if it is one of "Cold", "Warm", "Hot" or "Too hot to touch"?

I have also very hot North bridge on my 8RDA+. First thing I did when I got the board was removing the heatsink and changing that pink thermal transfer stuff to Arctic silver thermal compound. So, if that heat sink is barely warm to touch I think that pink stuff isn´t transferring heat too well.

Ditto, I have a feeling the TIM is 1: not good enough and 2: not always making full contact.

Could be the fact that my room temp is only about 10C

Its a nice idea, but if the pink stuff wasnt transfering the heat the heatsink should be cold....

If yours is hot to touch then the TIM is ok, and airflow isnt sufficent.

My room temp is only 15*c ATM, too bloody cold but nice for OCing

I have 3 case fans, but I´ve been thinking to add one more fan that blows toward north bridge. My room temperature is about 18º C. Maybe I should move my computer outside, it´s below zero degrees there

In fact I do have water cooling for my processor, I added some case fans when I noticed that NB heatsink got quite hot. Haven´t had any stability issues, though.
Putting radiator outside might be a bit too extreme idea, at least in january-february when temperature drops to around -30ºC.

My NB is hot... when I touch it with my finger I felt burn.

That is why I throw my Z-Chip block on the NB.

I guess hot NB only applies to Water Cooling people since there are not much air flow around the NB
