8RDA+ thermal images

Hi all.

I found this site that is very cool.

Pics of 8RDA+ taken with a thermal imaging camera.

Yikes. Now does anyone have suggestions for effective cooling of the two small vdd chips ?

That's what I did. Seems to work quite well.

But those chips are so freaking tiny...

I cut up an old socket-a heatsink for the mosfets and vreg chip. Those two vdd chips are so small, a portion of the heatsink for them would only have 1 fin on it, maybe 2. I didn't think it would be that effective. I suppose I can give it another go.

For those in the UK, theoverclockingstore.co.uk have some pretty small heatsinks which looks like they might do the job.

EFF, were you refering to the following, mini-mini heatsinks 5 pack?

http://theoverclockingstore.co.uk/pr...?codeid=800248

I have something similar (6 x 12 x 4) left over from prior overclocking back in the slot-A days. They'd probably fit nice (width-wise) with some overhang (length-wise). However, they seem sort of wimpy. Though it might be the best bet anyways, as you don't have much clearance (height-wise).

Or did you spot something else?

Brit,

If you're talking of the long fin HS, I think even with 1 fin the larger cooling surface would perform better than having bugger all on them.

I think what I'm going to do is cut up some that are a couple of fins in length and then file down the mating surface to the chip dimesions.

Yeah they're the ones and the mini heatsink for the vreg chip although it does look a bit 'wimpy' I'm sure it will be much better and if you can get a fan blowing down over them then all the better. They look similar to whats used on the 8RDA FAQ site.

thanx Holst. 'very kind.

coolermaster makes some tiny copper ram sinks that may prove useful for some spots.

Holst,

Thanks for posting the link to the pics. Curious how the center pair of MOSFETS are going supernova while the pair just to the right are running cool.

Are all of these MOSFETS for Vcore?
Does the center pair have twice the "on time" as the other two pair?

I was assuming that with a three phase design, each phase would carry approx. 33.3% of the load, but based on the thermal imaging, that doesn't appear to be the case.

Holy blazing hot 8RDA+ Batman! I am glad I sinked all those chips. Now I need to find something small enough for the vdd chip. Plus I found the Vanteq still could do a better job on the NB, so I glued a stock 60mm AMD fan to it, and it has been working like a charm. Got rid of the flicker at 213x10 @1.85vdd.

Personally, I suspect it's probably more to do with airflow than with duty cycle. It's hard to come to much conclusion when you don't really know everything that's going on.
