CPU Temperature

Hi,

Well, just installed a spanking new 1700+ T-Bred B core in my 8kta3pro to see what it could do.

I go it up to about 1750 stable at default voltage.

Anyway, back to the main point, my CPU temperature (as reported by Epox's USDM) gives a temperature of 55 deg C at idle, rising to 65/66 deg C when I was doing a 2 hour encoding running at about 98%.

Any ideas if this is an acceptable temperature before I go out a buy yet more kit. At the moment I just have a standard Coolermaster CPU heatsink/fan and bottom case fan sucking air in.

More tests this evening, with just the stock 1466 Mhz speed to see if this makes a difference.

Cheers

As long as its stable then 66*c is fine.

Many thanks Holst - not that I don't value you opinion , its just that there is so many differing opinions on the web.

Having just done a quick search withe results ranging from high 30s to 70s I am really not sure. I suppose I am thinking that, even though you say 66 is fine, then I ought to come down as much as I can anyway as most of the opinions have a distibution curve with 45-50 as an average.

Cheers

66 deg C is fine - less than 60 is better.

Less than 50 under load is very good with just air and case cooling once overclocking.

XP1700 max die temp is 90 buy you don't really want to top 70.

If you're worried, why not enable the auto-shutdown in the BIOS?

My old Athlon 1.4 use to run at the same sort of temp but since I upgraded to 2400+ XP my temps went down to about 12c for system and 42c for CPU. I've just added a zalman heatsink on the southbridge and added a few small heatsinsks to the mosfets and my temps have gone down to 9c system and 35c CPU. This is using the zalman 'flower' at silent setting, I've also got 2 fans at front of case blowing in and 1 exhaust fan (all set on low settings because I like it nice and quiet). And its overclocked to 2.2GHz at the moment, will try higher when I get some new memory.

66c will be fine as these things are designed to run at temperature but a little extra cooling has never hurt anyone, maybe an exhaust fan will help you out.

hi,

Just an update really. I procured a slightly larger Collermaster from a friend (probably won't be when he isn't going to get it back!), installed it with a bit of spit and polich - well, some Servisol Silicon compound (no Silver to hand - being a werewolf an'all).

Also installed an 8mm exit fan (at top/back of case - if thats what you meant EFF).

Anyway, the idle CPU temp is now 39 deg C, and after running encoding with the CPU at 98% for an hour its crept upt o the giddy heights of 41 deg C.

EFF - you mention slowing down the fans - how do you do that as its a bit louder than usual, and I can't hear 'er indoors - (swings a d roundabouts.....

Thanks

Do you use your PC in a chilled room EFF :-D

I see you in the UK and with my central heating at ~23C the system temp's just a little over that at 24.5C (XP2600+ @ 12x197 = 43.5C browsing).

12c => 9c system temps? are you computing in a walk-in fridge? that's upper 40's to low 50's??

my max temps are about 20c above ambient and 15c above system. that is to say 18c ambient => 23c system => 38c max load temp.

anyways, amazing temps there!!

Yep thats what i meant.

My zalman has a fan control on it and I've got a lian li case which has fan controls for the front fans, my enermax PSU has a fan control and my exhaust fan has a temp sensor on it. They are all set to the lowest setting to keep it as quiet as possible.

You can either get something simple like I've got on my fans (rheostat) or get something like a Rheobus fan controller which can control upto 4 fans without having to open the case up.

That's an amazing drop in temps. Definitely don't give that HSF back!! Probably the case exhaust is a big help too.

If you do have to give it back, I've gotten great results from the Vantec AeroFlow HSF. You can find it for ~$30. Works great for me!

Did I not mention that I live in an igloo. I know it seems very low and I know that the temps aren't accurate but I'm not going to complain as long as they stay low.
