No front channel sound on 8RDA+ PROBLEM SOLVED!! LOOK INSIDE!!

This is a really weird thing. I am building a computer for my father. The front channel sound will not work for some reason. If i unhook the two speaker jacks that go to my klipsch speakers and plug them into my computer they work great. If I reverse the plugs then the rear channel does not work. It would seem that the plug is bad but it is not. This is the second 8RDA+ that I have used today. The first one did the exact samething in this chieftec case. Could there be something that is shorting it out? There has to be a reason for this weirdness. I just cannot think of it. Could it be the ram? Please help I need to fix this tonight because my father is going home tomorrow. I am out of ideas. The power supply is a turbo link 420 watt power supply and the ram is kingston hyperx 3000 ram. Thanks!!!

gplracer , it sounds like the speakers are fine and the jack is not working you could try this:I got it to work by opening the Windows volume control--go into control panel and click "sounds and audio devices" , on the Volume tab page , put a checkmark in the box to show volume control on the taskbar , click apply.click ok.
double click the windows volume control icon now on your taskbar. click options , click advanced, now you should have an advanced button on that page , click IT and put a checkmark in the "other controls" 1. rear.. then close that out. when you check that box you should hear the speakers pop a little. Then open the nforce icon on the taskbar , and run the wizard.

Go through the soundstorm panel to check you are not muting the front channel. Use the wizard for to set up for analogue or digital.

Check the mobo manual for jumper settings for sound, since some configurations will mute output to the rear to reroute to a front panel jack.

I don't think He mentioned a front panel , I have one I built myself, the correct jack(s) will replace the jumper(s) on the motherboard. With nothing plugged into the front panel jack the signal will flow through the jack and back to the motherboard to go out the rear jack , with the plug in place in the front panel jack two things happen:
1. The signal is not sent back to the motherboard. (the tip of the plug physically lifts the contact away from its connection)
2. and it is fed to the headset(or whatever you have plugged into the front panel jack.
Good call on checking for the correct setting (digital or analog) , I had that set wrong on other motherboards before ( I believe the driver install sets it to analog by default) and if you have digital speakers in that case you might not get any sound out of it.

gplracer , if you want to check the jumpers they should be like this:Of course it helps to know that pins 9 + 10 are towards the back of the computer case , the close-up is rotated 90°.

Thanks for the suggestions. I just put the whole thing in another case and the same problem is present. I did find something though. Cheiftec has these things that go on either side of the cdrom drivers. One had slid down behind the metal tray that the motherboard sits on. It was not between the motherboard and the tray. It was between the tray and the outer wall. Is it possible that it shorted the front channel audio out on both boards? I can hear audio in the front channel if I turn it up real loud. Maybe this interferred with the install of windows. What do you think?

The checkmark is already in the audio panel thingy. Also the jumpers are in the correct place. Thanks those were excellent suggestions.

Timbob I am currently on my other computer. I do remember that both digital and analogue were both checked. Does that make a difference? I have gone through the setup wizard about 7-8 times. The funny thing is that I have built 6 computers with this motherboard and never ever had a problem with the sound or anything. Thanks again!

racer , I would set it to what you are using but not both. Did you set the windows audio settings?

I checked #1 but not #2. I do not have a center speaker. Do you think there is a possiblity that I shorted both boards out or is that unlikely? The windows reinstall is finishing now. I will double check these settings.

Update: After the reinstall the board is doing the exact same thing. I can barely hear the sound from the front channel. I think I burned the front channel out. It is the only thing that I can figure.

Racer , You said you had something ( cd slide rail ?) fall between the board tray and the case . I don't think you shorted it out , because it would have had to have been underneath the board and the tray OR into the socket . It is probably just the settings . You should try checking the Windows settings FIRST , then use the Nforce control panel. If you only have 4 speakers , then only put the checkmark in the box for #1 Rear speakers plugged into "Line in". Also get this one set right in the Nforce audio tray because you ARE using two inputs.

gplracer , you could click START>RUN , and type in DXDIAG and click OK. Test the sound in there. I still think it is a setting.Check the volume sliders , uncheck MUTE if it is checkmarked. The volume knob on the speakers. Both sets of speakers work but not in the one jack , right?

Yeah both sets of speakes work but not in the front jack. Well when they are plugged into the front jack if I turn my klipsch up real loud I can hear them barely. This is a volume that would wake the dead with the other channel. Also I am on my main computer now. I just plugged the speakers in and everything works fine so I am sure it is not the speakers. Also all of the nvidia settings seem to be the same as the ones on this computer. Bob this whole thing is really weird and driving me crazy. I am going to get some sleep now. Check back here in the morning for progress if you can. Thank you so much for your time!

Brian

gplracer , Yeah , I'll check back. Keep in mind that the Windows settings are seperate from the Nforce ones , They have to both be correct , setting one won't change the other. What model # Klipsch speakers do you have? Happy Easter.

might sound silly but my speakers have two different sized plugs. One was smaller and wouldn't make a good connection.Looking through my old parts i noticed a jack adapter that pluged into the jack and then the mobo.Weird they looked the same size but werent.

I havent been able to read all you two have posted (nice pic of your brother though timbob), but checking digital and analogue will mute a channel. Seriously it will. Try using only analogue. Make sure digital is not checked.

The reason for this is that I was using a pair of analogue speakers and a pair of digital speakers each on front, rear respectivly; and the analogue rear was muted when digital output was sent to the rear channel ( the rear channel speakers had both analogue and digital plugged in at once).
