[8k3a+] I can't understand this...

Okay so my new 512Mb Kingston Hyper-X PC2700 finally got here.

I was doing some tests using the latest 3409 (non-FCD) BIOS and this is what I got:

172MHz aggressive 2.67V = stable
179MHz aggressive 2.67V = unstable

179MHz seemed very stable, but after some hours of usage, when I was just beggining a new game in WarCraft3, my computer rebooted itself.

So I lowered it to 172 and played normally after that.

Later, I decided to do more tests: 198MHz stable in Windows (didn't test for long, but seemed) with 2-2-6-2 @ 2.67V. (Consider the major slow-down by these BIOSes when going over 180MHz)

So I flashed back to 2815M (2815 with 2.34 RAID firmware) to test some FCD enabled action .

Same thing, but problems are noticed much faster: 172MHz stable, but 179MHz unstable. Tried some high-FSB @ 197MHz, 2-2-6-3 but even with 2.77V the system wouldn't completely POST.
Didn't try more relaxed settings as it would be pointless.

Now the strange part: 179MHz testing (both with 3409 or 2815 BIOS) only lock-up in 3D games. 179MHz in 2815 (FCD enabled) went through almost 2 hours of memtest with no problems. In 2815, I relaxed one of the memory settings (can't remember now, sorry) and tried 179 again. Didn't lock-up @ 3DMark, but score was 1000 points lower then usual. Very strange.

I want to know your opinion. This is mine:
I can't get 3D stable operation at 179MHz, but I can at 171MHz, and other tests (not 3D dependant) appear to run just fine @ 179MHz (2 hours of memtest is not an easy task if it was unstable right?).
What I think that can be the cause: NB cooling. I'm using the original HS with a fan blowing directly on it. Appears just a little bit warm. Maybe not making good contact with NB. This might be the problem for my instability.

Now I would like to know what do you think? Does my NB cooling idea make any sense?

Now just for your knowledge: how much does FCD and after 180MHz tweaking by Epox affects performance:

3409 (FCD disabled)
172MHz = 12320 marks = 0m54s 2-2-5-2
198MHz = 12395 marks = 0m53s 2-2-6-2

2815 (FCD enabled)
172MHz = 12375 marks = 0m54s 2-2-5-2

And finally one more time my request to Epox: can't you make an option for the after-180MHz slowdown instead of setting it automatically at 180 and over? Also, can't a FCD option be added?

That's all. (Small post huh?)

If you got this far, thanks!

EDIT: just in case you wanted to know why 172 or 179 speeds:
My CPU's good spot is 1975MHz 1.65V. 11.5x172 = 11.0x179 = 1975MHz.
Why not higher FSBs? After 180MHz there is a major slowdown as shown.

Hi,
I think you should try and give your Ram a little more volts.
2,8-2,9 should be enough to run@179Mhz@2-2-2 5
I have had 2 8K3As (one + one non-plus)
My + ran 237Mhz with corsair PC3500C2@2-2-2 5@3V.
My non-plus was kind of a record-breaking Board: Nothing less than 250Mhz@2-2-2 5 Timings were possible (@3,15V vdimm though).
Maybe these were special Boards and not every 8K3A is as good, but, considering tha fact, that my 8KHA+ could do 220Mhz as well...
I guess Epox just ownes them all :-D

What BIOS were you using and what cooling was used to the northbridge?

Thanks!

Well, I'm not too sure about the Bios-version for it was really *some* months ago, I believe it was 2815...
NB was watercooled all time, using Screws and a good portion of AS2.
Good luck!

I think I need to cool my NB better...

I'll see what I can do here. By the way, does anyone has the measures for the NB cooler holes ? (distance and diameter)

Thanks...

BTW: I'm using 2B01 @ 197,9MHz 2-2-6-2 1T. (Everything aggressive but the option that can be 5T is @ 6T just for safety). 2.67V only. That's why I think I may need better NB cooling. I get severe image corruption (from BIOS screen) at approximatelly 215MHz. (Went from 208 to 215 so can't tell exactly the point).
