8rga problems

I am not an expert with computers, but know a little. Excuse my mistakes. I just got an 8rga mobo. I want fsb 333, I changed the jumper on the board to 133-166, and changed the bios frequency to 166. Upon doing this, the system will not boot, just flashes the bios back to default. Im running an athlon xp 2000+. Any reasons why this is happening.

It looks that it only supports the CPU i mean only 133mhz. U need a Barton like me 2500+ is the lowest 333fsb model u can get for bout 140. US.

Try lowering the multiplier and/or upping the vcore voltage

There are quite a few reasons why this could happen, but we could do with a little more info, like the brand and rating of the memory, what kind of voltages you have selected to run your CPU at (if you have adjusted anything), the power rating of you Power supply unit etc.

If your plan is to run your CPU at 333Mhz data rate (166 Mhz FSB) you would need RAM with minimum spec of PC2700.

Also running at 166 FSB would require you to go into the BIOS and manualy select that frequency since the xp 2000+ defaults to 133 Mhz FSB. If you find thet your system is unstable with these settings then your next step would be to run your CPU with a little more voltage, in 0.025v increments till you find stablility with your system & operating system.

Are you trying to run FSB @ 166, or memory @ 166, or both? And is your CPU a Palomino core, and is it still locked? Oh, and what speed is your ram rated for?

thanx for the help so far. I am running vdd at 1.8, not sure if its a palomino or not. My mem is kingston 333 pc 2700, and i have it running at 333ddr, but would like my fsb at 166, but can only get it at 133. Not sure how to do this. What does unlocking the chip entail?

Righty, apologies in advance as I've been drinking tonight (3:35am here)

The fact that you don't know whether your CPU is a Pally, or if it's unlocked or not leads me to beliveve that it is a Pally, and is indeed multi locked.

Okay then, locked Palomino XP2000 has a 12.5 multiplyer. Default bus speed is 133. 12.5 x 133 = 1667MHz. So far so good. Ramp up FSB to 166 and the CPU is suddenly running 12.5 x 166 = 2083MHz. And therein lies the problem: the CPU simply can't do nearly 2.1GHz!

You could try raising VCORE, however, the XP2000 Pally isn't really known for it's overclockabiltiy. That said, if it has AGOGA or AGOIA stepping then perhaps an increase in VCORE will enable it to run happily @ 12.5 x 166, depending on how good your cooling is.

Ultimately though, if you want a CPU to run at that speed, buy a cheapo XP1700 or XP1800 Thoroughbred B with JIUHB DLT3C stepping - Tbreds will be semi-unlocked (multi's upto 12.5x for the low end TBreds)

DO NOT waste £250/$350/whatever on a Barton.

IIRC the easiest way to determine whether you have a palomino or a thoroughbred is to install a program called WCPUID

Once installed run the program and you should be able to see 2 sets of numbers under family. To tell the chips apart concentrate on the top set, these should start with a 6 and end with a 1, the number of importance to you is the middle model number where a 6 will signify a Palomino core and an 8 will signify a Thoroughbred core.

Squall you were absolutely right in everything you said, except for that one! The Tbreds are FULLY unlocked.
It's the mobos that semi-unlock them
if you look a bit further you can find others that fully unlock them from 5x-24x

Well, I was assuming he'd be using his 8RGA, but I guess we're both right :clown:

I disagree, the reason why some newer motherboards allow the full unlocking from 5x-24x of CPUs is because of their ability to reset the 4-bit mutiplier value as outlined here rather than them being entirely unlocked at the CPU level as you say above. From experience the 8RDA+ & the 8RDA3+ does'nt offer this option (not sure about the 8RGA/+).
