Probs with 8KHA+ and XP2800+

Hi,

According to Epox' CPU List, the 8KHA+ supports CPUs up to 2800+. Got a correct post screen with FSB166, PC2700 RAM and 2800+, but Windows gives me "Unmounted drive .." error message. So I guess there's too much PCI speed for my hard disk.

Epox CPU List:
http://www.epox.de/dl/design/CPU_list.pdf

Using latest BIOS, which supports up to 2800+ good cooling and memory.

What's the problem with this?

Also I have problems getting my IEEE1394 PCI card installed under WinXP. Do I need Service Pack 1 for Windows XP?

Have you may tried temporily clocking down the cpu to 133 fsb? Does the problem go anyway when doing this?

Yes, no problems @FSB133 installing or working with Windows XP, but logically resulting lower internal clock speed ....

Using latest Epox BIOS (look at CPU List) should give me FSB166 support, doesn't it?

The 8KHA+ can run at 166MHz FSB but you get an overclocked PCI at 41.6MHz and overclocked AGP bus so either you have to buy a PCI IDE card or go into BIOS increase PCI latency to 64 and set ony up to ATA-66 for the hard drives also try to use AGP x2.I still work mine 8KHA+ almost 1.5 year at 170MHz FSB BUT i have an ATA-100 IDE(CMD-649 chipset) card and PCI latency set at 96.
Iam running a Tbred B 1800+ at 170x12.5=2125MHz 1.70V rock solid.

There is OFFICAL support für FSB166 up to 2800+ CPU - Epox would never guarantie this if the board does not support a 1/5 PCI divider. Of cause, the board was not designt to run @FSB166 out of the box (lack of FSB166 CPU when released), but board and clock gens do support the neccessary divider.

So your HDD is plug to a external PCI Controller and is working @UDMA66 with latency @96? Do you also get errors when running @UDMA100 and 32 (onboard IDE)? Also the message "Unmounted Drive ..."?

btw ... how high goes your AQZEA with default Vcore?

This thing about the 8KHA+ and 1/5 divider is very old and the 8KHA+ DOES NOT HAVE 1/5 PCI Divider.
Look at the proof:
http://www.overclockers.com/articles554/
Anyway even if the clockgens support 1/5 and 1/6 the chipset has to support them to work.
I havent used the hdd with the onboard ide and it runs using UDMA100 with PCI latency 96 and it a western digital 40GB BB,search this forum for the topic 8KHA+ and PCI dividers. The Barton runs at 2200 using default voltage 2300 need 1.8V and 2410 need 1.9V using SLK-800 and a Delta fan at 3500 rpm.

You could read this thread:

http://www.amdforums.com/showthread....5&pagenumber=2

From BIOS try selecting DRAM clk=spd= or 100 then 3/4 kicks in and if your FSB is @ 166 then your ram is running @ 3/4 * 166 = 124.5 MHz. I would like hear if PCI speed is derived from DRAM speed or from processor speed directly.

This thing about the 1/5 PCI divider as i said is very old and the 8KHA+ doesnt have it and there is not point to run the RAM async and PCI does not derived from this thing, the guy at the overclockers.com has measured the PCI bus speed and there is no question about it.
When the 8KHA+ was very popular this was a very big topic and it is proven that there is no 1/5 divider.

Anandtech said:

"This is made possible by two very important features by EPoX, the 1/5 and 1/6 PCI bus divider and also the 100/133 memory bus divider. With these two settings, you can be running your FSB at 200MHz while maintaining the memory and PCI buses at 150MHz and 33MHz respectively. The memory could be compensated by the new PC2400 or PC2700 parts, and the PCI bus is still within spec."

But John R. Abaray did not try the 3/4 memory bus divider?
If the pci clock would be derived from dram then running FSB at 200Mhz with this 3/4 setting on then memory speed would be 150MHz and PCI at 150 dram would be 37.5 MHz and AGP 75MHz. Another issue is what you would gain running memory async like that. I don't know that.

I can not test this because I'm still running 1GHz Duron processor. I'm probably just dreaming but this would be kind of last hope?

Oh my god this review on Anandtech was the main argument from the people that believed that it has a 1/5 dividers BUT IT DOESNT,ask EPoX Tech.I once myself believed that it had a 1/5 PCI divider but its TRUE it DOESNT SUPPORT 1/5 PCI Divider

Has anybody tried to edit 8KHA+ BIOS? What is the right of CBROM program.

CBROM V2.01A (C)Award Software 1999 All Rights Reserved.

******** 8khal00.bin BIOS component ********

No. Item-Name Original-Size Compressed-Size Original-File-Name
================================================== ============================== 0. System BIOS 20000h(128.00K)133FAh(76.99K)8khaL00.BIN
1. XGROUP CODE 0F960h(62.34K)0AA66h(42.60K)awardext.rom
2. ACPI table 02BA2h(10.91K)01185h(4.38K)ACPITBL.BIN
3. Other(4029:0000) 03840h(14.06K)01A50h(6.58K)_EN_CODE.BIN

I would like to play with my BIOS file and some other that have same PLL chip with 1/5 and 1/6 divider. In the past i was able to write some assembly and I could look how the ICS 94228 programming is done on 8kha+ bios...

Cool No probs for me

Lower the hd to UDMA 66 (you have to force it !)- this solved my problems up to 174 MHz FSB. Without any PCI cards at all, the board runs up to 198 MHz.
