Question Upgrading help needed

I've been asked to upgrade my dads pc for him, and have ended up being advised to get the following.

either xp 2400 processsor or xp 2500

and a EPoX EP-8RDAE mainboard for Socket A DDR

along with some crucial memory.

How does that sound?

I literally can't spend any more on a motherboard than about £40.

The system will not be overclocked, and will be used for office applications, surfing the web, alongside a distributed computing project using 100 % cpu usage whenever the pc is on.

Basically I need to know:

1)Is this motherboard suitable for the above?
2)My dad wants 512 MB Ram. Should he get one 512MB stick, or 2 * 256 MB sticks and run in dual mode (and will this board support that)?
3)Is the motherboard known to be stable, reliable etc?
4)Are there any better alternatives people can think of?
5)Does anyone know of any online reviews for this board (i've tried my best and have so far been unable to find any reviews on it)?

Sorry if any of these questions seem dumb, but despite being a competent computer user I have no idea about upgrading hardware.

Any info will be greatly appreciated

8RDAE looks like it will do the job you are asking. as
for the memory, look at Buffalo also. two sticks of
256/3200, dual channel is supported. I'd go for the
Barton 2600+. good luck with the build.

*8rda+ v2.x is very good.
mine: 8RDA+v1.0, 2x256x3200CorsairXMS, Barton 2500+ solid combo.*

Get these from www.Komplett.co.uk
Order No. 119665: Epox 8rdae - £41.13
Order No. 114488: AMD 2600XP - 2.083Ghz - 333fsb - £71.70
Order No. 112666: PC3200 - 512MB DDR400Mhz - £44.65

all this for £157.58 + Delivery

Really cheap for the bits

At ebuyer.com simler bits would set you back £200+

At directfrom.com simler bits would cost you £220+

You wont get these bits cheaper.

Unfortunatley komplett.co.uk is not an authorised distributor and offers no EPoX UK support.

Would suggest waiting a couple of weeks for EP-8RDA3I which is NForce2 Ultra 400 (Dual Channel rather than single like 8RDAE) and has LAN onboard for a fraction more. This will be available from all EPoX UK authorised distributors and retailers who can be seen at http://www.epox.org/purchase from approximatley 10/01/04.

cheers for the replies everyone

What will the limitations be with buying from komplett, if it isn't an authorised distributor?
